Halfbakery Orphanage

For lonely ideas
  (+13, -1)(+13, -1)
(+13, -1)
  [vote for,

This would simply be a halfbakery page listing all ideas that have only a few votes or none at all. Caring souls (and those unable to conceive their own ideas)could go here to support poor, lonely posts without anyone to love them.

Even a boned idea is happier than a neglected one.

Orphans http://www.halfbake..._20err_29:t=Orphans
Poor little orphans.
Unfortunately, due to the great bakery explosion of 'ought four, there may be a number of ideas in this list that recieved plenty of care and attention initially, but who's votes were tragically lost forever, swept away by a tide of magnetic corruption. [zen_tom, Jan 24 2006]

My shot at unannotated http://www.halfbake...n=Unannotated:i=:t=
Most of them have been. These are just the ones that haven't been commented on by [UB], [DrC], [thumbwax], [po] or [bristolz] [hidden truths, Jan 25 2006]

My better shot at an unannotated list http://www.halfbake..._20annotators_2e:t=
The list of people I removed was too long for a view title so I had to make an annotation of it. [hidden truths, Jan 26 2006]

Annotation:

I have been trying for a while to create a view of ideas that have no votes or annotations, but I can't find a way of doing it. I may have to ask Our Lady of the Bakery if no one out there knows.

Wagster - I think you can do this by going to "search, then "idea", then at the top of the page there is a tiny "edit`' button. When you hit this, a large number of search criteria opens that will allow you to seemingly refine your search criteria to do just about anything. ( I still prefer the look of the fishbone logo and seem to be able to attract them from time to time with apparent ease) +

Oh. I thought we were all going to pool our money and raise unwanted children in a 'baking environment.
normzone, Jan 24 2006

Can you clarify, xenzag? I don't quite know what you mean. You might be able to do this by using two views and combining them, but I don't know.

Good idea! Bun, so you don't feel neglected.
dbmag9, Jan 24 2006

They're called 'views' [xenzag] - and they won't do this. Please prove me wrong anyone?
wagster, Jan 24 2006

       You spelt wagster wrong.
bristolz, Jan 24 2006

       no, he didn't
po, Jan 24 2006

sure he did. note the use of the capital letter.

apparently many of us are so self-effacing that we don't even believe we're worthy of proper noun status.
shapu, Jan 24 2006

Set up two views. The first should be a view of ideas with at least one vote in total, call that one voted_on (or something equally tedious). The second should be something that looks at all ideas that are not included in your first view - i.e. all ideas that have less than one vote in total. Configure this view to list ideas by date entered, or filter it to show only those ideas by your favourite bakers, then save it with a nice name.
zen_tom, Jan 24 2006

       Oh yes he did [Po]!

Thanks [z_t], that's half the puzzle solved, but how about finding the ones with no annotations? Imagine them, languishing at the bottom of the tank having never been seen by anyone but the author. I still can't figure out how to do this.
wagster, Jan 25 2006

I tried making a view that counted the number of 'e's in an idea (assuming that the more annos an idea had, the more 'e's (or other arbitrary characters) it would have collected (by searching for the character, and then sorting by search matches)) but kept getting pages full of Vernon ideas.
zen_tom, Jan 25 2006

You could filted by annotation. It would be hideously time consuming to filter out every annotation as it would mean listing every baker. But by only showing ideas not annotated by the more prolific bakers (here's looking at you Bubba and Curry).
hidden truths, Jan 25 2006

Just hitting "random" often gets ideas with few, if any votes.
ato_de, Jan 25 2006

Sorry to report this [hidden], but the first three ideas I pulled out of your "Unannotated" view all had so many annos that I had to scroll down. Surely we can do better than this (ok, I've tried and can't, but surely someone else can).
wagster, Jan 25 2006

//Oh yes he did [Po]! // who did?
po, Jan 25 2006

       Xenzag, [pO].

       ;)
wagster, Jan 25 2006

       ah, So!
po, Jan 25 2006

I hope I didn't cause any problems, but I tried to make a view "not annotated by", and a very long list of names. The Server complained at me. If you check the http page address at the top, it is possible to decode the meaning, and write 1,2,3,4,5 etc. for the users. So it was a simple cut and paste job from a CSV file.

Up to 100 users was OK, but 1000 users caused a complaint. Sorry.

By the way "Peter Sealey" with the inverted commas is number 1.
Ling, Jan 25 2006

(joining the utterly irrelevant wagster convo: how do you know xenzag wasn't merely capitalizing for the start of the sentance? Or if proper nouns are capitalized regardless of where they appear grammically, does that means 'improper' nouns with a deliberate lower case remain so in defiance of all grammatical rules as well as their own?)
yamahito, Jan 25 2006

[wagster], It was never going to be particularly accurate as I was only filtering out ideas that 5 users had annotated on. I've got a version 2.0 ready and it is officially filtering: <takes big breath>

UnaBubba, DrCurry, po, thumbwax, bristolz, 2 fries shy of a happy meal, wagster, hippo, StarChaser, FarmerJohn, jutta, benfrost, Worldgineer, st3f, pottedstu, Ling, skinflaps, Ian Tindale, jonthegeologist, beauxeault, absterge, DesertFox, krelnik, reensure, phoenix, Letsbuildafort, neilp, bungston, RobertKidney, moomintroll, DeathNinja, DrBob, 8th of 7, ConsulFlaminicus, Basepair, angel, Shz, bookworm, quarterbaker, silverstormer, Aristotle, jurist, pluterday, k_sra, normzone, AfroAssault, Cedar Park, theircompetitor, phundug, Monkfish, david_scothern, coprocephalous, calum, RayfordSteele, PotatoStew, Steve DeGroof, waugsqueke, egnor, egbert, my face your, sctld, AbsintheWithoutLeave, sophocles, Pericles, fogfreak, zen_tom, yamahito, half, centauri, Freefall, Klaatu, BrauBeaton, Machiavelli, Zimmy, contracts, squeak, blissmiss (wasn't sure whether to include her), zeno, shapu, gnomethang, lurch and supercat. <exhales deeply>

It's still very flawed and I'm probably missing at least one obvious 'baker. The criteria I used were bakers who turned up at least 500 results to the search page that I could think of. Eliminating all ideas with annotations with them in shortened the list of ideas to (from when I started this) 27451 to a paltry 1384. It's far from precise, though the ideas remaining should be fairly quiet or at least full of obscure users. Anyone with suggestions for other 'bakers worth removing from the list can a) write an annotation and I'll probably see it eventually, b) e-mail or c) do it themselves. I think c) is the best choice, but that's just me.

I've added the creation and modification dates on the page. If you want ideas that are definitely un-annotated look for the ones that are the same.
hidden truths, Jan 26 2006

shame you didn't view categories with that list - that might be interesting.
po, Jan 26 2006

Nice data mining [hidden], I now understand how you're going about this. I have turned up a few ignored ones already.

Now... somewhere (I will endeavour to find it) there is a view someone has saved which lists *all* halfbakery users. It should be possible to cut 'n paste that page, maybe doing a 'replace all' to remove unwanted characters and filter that. That will produce more accurate results still. Then filter that view for anything with a vote and we should have what I'm after. I will get onto it if I have the time today.
wagster, Jan 26 2006

[wagster] It's easy enough to get a list of all users - I've sent this to you privately.
hippo, Jan 26 2006

[wagster], that is what I already tried, and there is a limit to the length of the query string. See my previous anno.

Look at [hidden truths] "My better shot..." link, look at the address bar and see:

       fxn=1285,10363,6159,5209...

Each number appears to represent an author. So if that string is edited with 1,2,3,4..30000, then all authors can be accounted for. Except that the string becomes too long.

       Anyway, for fun, try 18993.
Ling, Jan 26 2006

Well I used [hippo]'s link to get a list of all current users (which took the hb a while to figure out, I won't make a habit of it), reformatted it to a vertical list, put it into [hidden]'s view and ran into [Ling]'s problem. GODDAMMITCARTMAN!!

I'm presuming [jutta] will drop in and tell us if this stuff is upsetting the server at all. In fact I'm rather hoping she might might tell us if this is possible or not. Hello [jutta]? Maybe I should project a huge croissant onto the clouds...
wagster, Jan 26 2006

[po] I did originally view categories as I was doing it. Entering [bristolz] for example, almost halved the number of ideas in the halfbakery category. I simply changed the scale to votes to post as it makes it easier to find unannotated ideas (look for ideas with 0 or close to that votes).

In theory you could go as far as the system will let you with the 'bakers list but I thought it might be more effective to go for the more noticable 'bakers.

Out of interest [hippo], was the list you sent [wagster] the list of all bakers who have posted ideas or some other one that I'm unaware of. If it is the case then there could be ideas only annotated by users who never posted.
hidden truths, Jan 26 2006

You're right - it's everyone who has posted 1 or more ideas and probably misses a number of annotators with no ideas.
hippo, Jan 26 2006

The contributors to this site who only post annotations, but no ideas, could be called "drifting snowflakes" which sounds rather mystical and Japanese, but also honours [Drifting Snowflake] who posted no ideas and only posted two annotations which were cited in Lynne Truss's multi-million-selling "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" - arguably the highest fame to contribution ratio of any HalfBaker.
hippo, Jan 27 2006

All right! Which one of you is Lynn Truss? (hope I spelt you name rong, by the wa).
moomintroll, Jan 27 2006

I've never read the famed "Eats, shoots and leaves", but I might have guessed that this place would be mentioned. Sometimes it feels like being in an English lesson :)
wagster, Jan 27 2006

I like this idea. The very worst thing I think that can happen to a new baker, is that their idea might be ignored. Flaming is, to me, better than neglect.

I remember when I was new, and there was not a lot of folks here. Literally you could sit and wait for 2 hours or so, (Potedstu, barney, xsarenka, po, and more), till someone posted, or commented.

       One is the lonliest...
blissmiss, Jan 28 2006

       I don't think I spelled that right.
