I like the idea but I'm not sure the text-only compromise is worth it.

nope, this place is good the way it is. don't want it cluttered with little do hickeys (standard emoticons-not yours) that I still, after all this time, can't see anyone over the age of 14 actually liking (I know many older people do actually use them, and the :) , etc, but to me that's for pre-teen girls to put on the notes to each other they pass in class and still can't take them seriously.

I do like your list though, and I admit it might be helpful, but now this text entry box would have to get all cluttered up around the edges like every other text entry box on the web (forums, web mail, ...)

and why stop there? why not let every one force the fonts, spacing and all the other crap, add pictures, facebook and tweeter linking, the whole nine yards.

       slippery slope. (-)

I see quite a lot of CVs and job applications and I know that one day I'll see someone's job application with a smiley on... - I think this is predicted somewhere towards the end of the Book of Revelations.

That would be 'Famine', the third of the four horsemen of the apocolypse... "and the third beast had a face as a man".

Hi Oxen, wow, you've been gone a long time, or so it seems.

Anyway, as this place is no finer, or more annoying than the people who contribute, I was a complete emoticon phoebe, till I noticed that bris used them here on occasion, seemingly to make her criticisms less stinging.

She then defended them when a similar idea was posted, long ago. So I thought to myself, when in the company of a master, one should follow the masters lead ;-)

And I have ever since. (bris not a pre-teen by any means, as you will recall, oxen.)

She could wield anything with grace, wisdom, respect and humility; words, sketches, 3d models, emoticons. That's a rare talent, and most of the rest of us are like a gorilla pacing around in our cage, flinging whatever we can get our hands on to try to make our point.

But she also didn't need emoticon gif symbols to embed in the text, a simple :-) was enough.

Yeah, it's been a while. I've been checking in every 6 months or so, but never had the time or urge to say anything before, nothing that I stumbled across was all that compelling :-( Weird, re-reading some of my old annos, thinking how the hell did I think of that :-S

Ugg, I just can't do it, makes me feel clumsy, like a gorilla trying to cut out intricate paper doilies.

Anyway, I'll try to keep an open mind. Q;-)

Open mind? I thought we recently invented the "comb-over" for that !:-)
lurch, Nov 25 2009

Oh I get it. There's a difference between ;-) and a jumping up and down, manic, little, yellow period with a smile? Yup, oxen, you are right. She did it with grace. ( And about that Phoebe running around here...so much for proofing what one writes ;-)
