Goth Wings

Like raver fairy wings, only more spooky

If you've been to a rave, various clubs, or anywhere where candy-raver kids congregate, you've probably seen kids (usually girls, though this need not be a rule) with little fairy/butterfly wings strapped to their backs.

I was thinking a while ago that there may be a market for a goth variant of this; wings which goth kids could strap to their backs when going clubbing. There could be several variants:

- for the bouncy, perky-goth girls, there could be small, cutesy bat wings in black velvet. Variants could be made in purple or blood red if there is demand.

- for the more serious, less "cute" goths (of either sex), there could be black leather demon wings, like from old engravings of Hell. These would have internal frames, and some models could even fold out to an imposing wingspan. If the wearer is of a disposition to brood about the decay and despair of the world, they could be sold pre-tattered.

The black leather variants could be sold in various sizes, with steep markups, and would soon become status symbols. The pricing would ensure that the purchasers were willing to make sacrifices to acquire a goth status symbol, and thus were likely to be committed to the scene. Those without good standing in the local goth scene who bought the deluxe set with Daddy's credit card would soon be ostracised from the local scene, enforcing the linkage with status.

If the goth scene is not a large enough market, one could expand the marketing to the death-metal scene, changing brand names, typography on promotional material, and perhaps making slight alterations to the design.

maybe sell the materials in a kit, as any self-respecting goth would probably rather DIY than strap on some off-the-shelf accessories just so. That way, the more aesthetically pleasing and/or functional, then obviously the more serious the goth, and the more respect earned? just a thought; I've never been one of said goths.
absterge, Apr 02 2001

damn goths! take up too much room as it is!
panthaz paradise, Apr 02 2001

And for the industrial rivethead goths, you could have black PVC wings with a naked metal frame showing through holes, with bits of wiring and plastic tubing poking out and such... perhaps even seven-segment displays and ominous flashing lights.
acb, Apr 03 2001

They are already out there, and dodgy little 16yr old blonde wannabe Goths always wear them out to clubs!! It's kinda disturbing, and a little too cute!!! However the leather idea does sound quite amusing, to laugh at of course!!
scampyangel, Apr 03 2001

[UnaBubba] Yes. Although I'd hate to think that the rest of the halfbakery thinks that I spend my days searching for halfbakery links; The 'Goth Dolls' were the 4th link returned for a search for "goth dolls" on Google.

why wing shapes for the industrial [or cyber]? why not wings such as 'archangel' on the xmen? or a jetpack,or small aeroplane wings..
technobadger, Apr 03 2001

Black feathered wings are readily available at most costume stores, as well as most of the anachronistic festivals I've attended.
nick_n_uit, Apr 04 2001

Zippy: Where do you think he's been? Halfbakery of course. You don't post that many ideas and annotations and still have time to leave your house... :)
PotatoStew, Apr 04 2001

[nick_n_uit] So, was GothCon 2000 one of the festivals you've attended?
hippo, Apr 04 2001

Actually, I should have said "all ONE of the anachronistic festivals I've attended." And no, I meant the Michigan Renaissance Festival. Plus I don't thnk GothCon would necessarily be anachronistic.
nick_n_uit, Apr 05 2001

Did people wear black feathered wings during the Middle Ages? Hadn't heard about that.
gamecat, Apr 05 2001

"Mother Tink" (I think the "mother" appelation may be getting dropped as the "other" tink has since given up the name for that of another fictional character.) has been doing this sort of thing for about 2 years now. She was not the first person at the club she regularly attends to wear wings, though. I can't speak for everywhere, but Goths with Back Wicks (What, you never thought about setting a fairy's wings on fire? attend more renaissance festivals) are pretty old hat in this part of the country. (see pic's from gothcon 2k link) As a sidenote, aside from being vaguely silly, Tink is a rather good seamstress. She's taken to wearing homemade vegas-showgirl style outifts with her wings.

*wonders what prompted such a note*
*reads poster's profile*
*hits the Back button, and has a smug little laugh*
absterge, Aug 18 2001

We all have lives, celizafinn. Just because someone chooses to live that life wearing black or putting on wings and you don't doesn't mean they no longer have a life. What is "having a life," anyway? Getting drunk off your ass? Getting in fights? Pretending to be something you aren't in order to hang out with other people doing the same thing, wearing khakis, button up shirts and backwards hats while drinking Budweiser? Yes, for some people. For others there's skateboarding, pornography, and explosions (that's me). Still, others prefer to be alone while others would do anything NOT to be.

In conclusion, I have only to say that blowing stuff up is really, really fun.
AfroAssault, Aug 18 2001

       What [absterge] said.

Mind you, that profile's not been revised in nearly a year. Maybe [celizafinn] has reneged on her life of positivity and hippy-dippy proclamations.
-alx, Aug 18 2001

Ok, I just heard something kinda disturbing: I talked to "mother tink" last night at a club after not having seen her in a few months. She said something about having made posts here and then having them removed and her account cancelled, does anyone know why - or who did it?
bear, Sep 15 2001

I, too, was wondering what happened, I recall her annotations here and there, then POOF! they flew away like a fairy out of hell.

Peter mentioned screwing up his old account (actually I believe he said "blew up"), perhaps she did the same?
AfroAssault, Sep 15 2001

I`m glad that I do`nt know what any of you are on about.
March Hare, Sep 15 2001

Nothing major, just a user named Mother Tink. She had some annotations on this idea and suddenly they were gone. Maybe she's Batman?
AfroAssault, Sep 16 2001

[Admin: Steve is right. I kicked her out after the fifth time she added a generic pointer to her cyberfashion retail site to a specific idea. I don't have a problem with commercial links as long as they are factual and actually pertain to the invention.]
jutta, Sep 21 2001

Leather wings do, in fact, exist, and have for awhile. Any devotee of the store Religious Sex on St. Mark's Place in New York would know them. They retail for around 700. :)

AfroAssault, muchos to you for coolness.

I like the vellum idea. But what about just black web wings? maybe chainmail. or keychains you can attach stuff to.
