Wouldn't you shrink about an inch a week from the weight of the thing?

Does anybody know how much gold weighs per cubic meter/foot compared to the stuff they use to make construction worker hats or military helmets?
eagle, May 25 2000

An excelent idea, we could use a thin sheet of gold so it would be flexible and conform itself to the shape of ones cranium. Then you could stop for a shoe shine and get you hat polished. Stand clear of the power line thou, and stay indoors during lightning storms.
scotty1969, May 29 2000

Probably too heavy and too soft (softer than lead when pure) for millinery applications. To answer eagle's question, gold has a specific gravity of 19-point-something, which means it's about 20 times heavier than ABS hardhat plastic. Gold leaf, though, can be applied to just about anything, and stops those annoying CIA mind-control rays just as well as aluminum foil. A better use for solid gold: frying pans. Nothing sticks because the metal is highly inert, and there's few things that conduct heat better.

Julia Childs did a show with a solid gold frypan once...I forget what the reason was, I think a science show sponsored it...said it was the best cooking utensil she'd ever used.
StarChaser, Jun 06 2000

Presumably a frying-pan with gold electroplating would work nearly as well, and be much cheaper? They plate coffee filters (I've used the same one for 7+ years now), so I wonder, actually, why this isn't done.

(And how do we know that Au is as good as Al against mind-control rays? Clearly, this topic cries out for detailed investigation.)
cosma, Jun 07 2000

Wouldn't necessarily be as good. The reason for plating the filters is that gold does not tarnish and is very inert, so it doesn't pick up smells or whatever. You'd have to have more solidity to a frypan for it to be worth the trouble. Maybe something like high-end cookware now...has a big heavy lump of copper in the base, surrounded by aluminum <Copper is reactive and will be eaten by things like tomato sauce, so you need to protect it>. The copper gives better heat transfer.
StarChaser, Jun 15 2000

How about a hat woven out of thin gold wires, or gold-plated wires? Would the spaces between the weft decrease the protective value of the anti-mind-control metal?

Last weekend I was given a book of gold leaf (as used in bookbinding etc.) and I have an old baseball cap - maybe I should bake this idea...

If I were practicing mind control on someone with a gold hat, the first thing I'd control his/her mind to think is to send me the gold hat. So if it works, you better not take it off.
beauxeault, Jul 11 2000

I don't know why, but I imagine this gold hat as being shaped like a pyramid.
Jim, Aug 14 2000

Yeah, a pyramid with an eyeball in the center which blinked when you passed another gold hat wearer.
benfrost, Apr 16 2001

it has to be solid gold, gold leaf or foil wouldn't be expensive enough, thus defeating the primary purpose of a gold hat, to make one's fabulous wealth impossible to overlook
BertieWooster, Jul 18 2001

       // One size fits all // - ????

I want my gold hat tailored to my exact head shape at enormous expense. You should be able to look inside it and deduce my personality from the bumps therein. (Actually, I think you could deduce my personality from about half a mile away, by the soft glinting of my headwear in the evening light).
pottedstu, Oct 02 2001

But wouldn't it be a smack in the teeth if someone stole it? Like off your head?
bookends, Jun 09 2005

My favourite sort of idea: simple, to the point and requires no explanation.

[pottedstu] - I don't think it would be *that* much more expensive than the hat itself. (Yes I know you wrote that about four years ago, but I've seen you about not so long ago)
