Gibraltar barrage

Why not dam the gibralata straits

If a barrage was built in the Gibralta straits between Spain and Morroco it would be possible to make use of the high evaporation rate in the Med. If once the dam was built the sluice gates were left shut enough time for a difference of 1 meter to occur between Atlantic ocean and the Med, the Med being 1 meter lower than the Atlantic because of it's high evaporation rate. After that difference had occured the sluice gate could be opened and there would be a constant flow from the Atlantic to the Med.

yes a nice ridiculusly expensive engineering poject... trying to finance it would be a nightmare but we cant let that stand in the way of a good? idea... + vote from me

       But, why?
Susen, Aug 12 2001

[Susen] To generate electricity. Then hippo can have her Dodgy Silent Windchimes. It might also make a nice short-cut to Morocco. Cruise lines might not like it though. Any way to build locks?

//Then hippo can have her Dodgy Silent Windchimes.//

       [phoenix] --- is [hippo] a "her"? (I don't think so....but I could be wrong.....)

[Rods] and [Trouvere] seems you've done [chris13]'s work. Shouldn't the poster of an idea be the one to explain the "why?" of the idea?

Has no one seen the photo I linked to my profile page?!!! (note ironic over-use of exclaimation points). Also see link.

[hippo] <sheepish grin> Sorry about that guy. Don't know why I had it in my head that you were female. BTW, nice pic. Somehow reminds me of Alice in Wonderland...

[Rods]: Yes - good guess! (or are you some kind of expert on recognising camera equipment from photos?)

Nice pic hippo (shame about the ugly mug though!). It's lucky that you're the same shape as the room you work in.

Anyway (to return to the original idea) this would still only result in a net flow equal to the current through the straights at the moment. I don't know what that is but I wouldn't have thought it was enough to justify the size of the damn involved, compared to spending the same amount of money on lots of smaller hydroelectric schemes.

I seem to recall this in a Clarke novel somewhere. IT was mentioned. I don't remember which, 3001, I think. but they damed the straits and then drained all the water. Afterwardsthey used the newly dry land for the excess population and the archeological gold mine it would be. In all sincertiy though, why would we want to play with the Earth's climate. Seems as though it would cause serious problems thoughout the world. beswides what would we do with the excess water. I can understand the hope or a goal of alleveing the plight of drough victims, but that is a lot of water to simply ship.

I forgot soemthing else too. . . Doing something to the area would affect the economies of a lot of North African and southern European nations, many of which partially rely on that body of water

Bang a railway route over the top and get really nice picturesque rail holidays from London to Capetown.

The implications for tourism, ecology and climate render this project very fishy......

Better to build giant turbines below the water and use the force of the existing current to generate electricity. Far less disruptive to shipping, fish, dolphins and European climates.
