A big fan that spans the whole side of the CPU case and rotates slowly behind an attractive grill. Gamers could put their neon lights inside the case and still see in through the rotating fan. Added bonus in that, with the neon, the fan would cast lovely shadows on walls adjacent to the CPU case. Most of all, though, it would be quiet, I think.Extra%20huge%20computer%20case%20fan%2e

quiet fan? mad dreamer. Better in the current economic climate hire a couple ex-stockbrokers as CPU wallahs. Loincloths and everything.

Would the light inside cast a weird choppy slow - moving shadow a la "Bladerunner?" That would be cool...
snarfyguy, Oct 25 2002

       Exactly.
bristolz, Oct 25 2002

       better still, get a few of those LEDs embedded into the fan so you can write out messages as it spins around. <rotating>A C R O I S S A N T F O R B R I S T O L Z</rotating>.

I hear the G5 towers do something like this, I think they are even quiet. +

One question...[briz] how did you get a picture to show up on the HB page? That is WAY cool!
Klaatu, Oct 25 2004

Jutta added a new site-wide illustration feature and I merely tried it out.

For more information about this new capability, Jutta wrote about it in the "news" section.

my goodness - an image. its alive!

Hat's off. That is way cool. <gets whiplash carpal twinge scrolling to news too quickly>

On the subject of the idea itself, I had a couple of little fans one behind the other, with a light behind them both. The shadow it cast on the opposite wall rotated at the beat frequency of the two fans. Looked quite nice.

Not sure if you'll be able to get a big, near-silent fan with sufficient cooling power - anything slow enough to be really quiet probably wouldn't do the job. Suspect there may be an optimal compromise between noise and speed/cooling power though. Nice picture. [+]
DocBrown, Oct 25 2004

Cooling power wouldn't be a problem... PCs exist that combine decent power (mid-range AthlonXP) with _no fans whatsoever_. This would serve to make it look good.
david_scothern, Oct 25 2004

A picture! It's like living in the 21st century! [Bris] - why not pop over to 'parabolic pool table' and put up you illustration for that one? You know you want to!

On the subject of fans and noise, my machine lives in my recording studio (not as glamourous as it sounds, sadly) and therefore noise is a huge problem. I have recently fitted the brilliant Nexus Skive-Tech cooling block (>19dBA), but there are many silent cooling, case and PSU fans out there (see link). None of them look as cool as Bris's.
