I propose that a new road sign be introduced, to encourage drivers to use all lanes when approaching lane closure, congestion etc ahead.

The road sign, that could be an electronic display would be designed to represent a funnel.

I thought of the funnel as a recognizable symbol.
In a funnel the material is packed by gravity and
fills all the available space.
Motorists do not usually use all the space available to them, so how can,
they be encouraged to do so?

A related idea is a FILTER, that usually fits in a funnel anyway. In some parts of the country locals do behave in a sensible manner and traffic flows.

Funnel Ahead is meant to be a new? verb.
Not intended to be a pun.
This congestion problem is damaging both
in terms of its cost financialy and psychologically.

There already is a sign for merging (at least in IL). We also have electronic signs that warn of traffic conditions in the Chicago area.
