Here in the UK, fridge freezers typically have a fridge compartment in the top half, and a freezer in the bottom. Often, space is lacking in one or the other. Sometimes, both are empty; I can't offer any new suggestions for fixing that.
My idea is to produce a fridge/freezer with three compartments,
one above the other. The top one is a fridge, the bottom one is a freezer. The middle one can be either.
Now you can reconfigure it on the fly to make best use of the space. Alternatively, you could just stuff both freezer compartments with bargains you're not going to eat for months, and then find you have no space in the fridge.

I think this might be tricky to engineer, but
not impossible. As I understand it, fridge-
freezers have the freezer section at the
top, wrapped in the cooling coils. The
cold air falling from this then keeps the
fridge frigid, without the need of an
independent cooling circuit. |

In the UK, the freezer is almost always at the bottom. I've never seen a fridge/freezer of this style (50:50 split) with the freezer uppermost. Mind you, I've not spent too much of my life looking... |

//the freezer is almost always at the
bottom.// Now that I think about it, you're
right. I was thinking of old fridges that
have a little icebox in the top.
Nevertheless, the cooling for the fridgey
part is still provided by the freezery part, I
think. |

Hmmm. I suspect I have been fobbed off
with cheap freezers all my life. |

[MaxwellBuchanan] The cheap ones have the logo upside down and 4 little stumps on the top. |

[david_scothern] You could use this to increase efficiency. The centre compartment could just be opened to whichever other compartment it should behave as, or be closed off to just be an empty cupboard not requiring cooling. |

My freezer is at the top, but my friend has a side by side. That might be easier to accomodate your idea, though it would be very wide. I still like the thought. + |

The middle bit is where your penguins sleep. |
