Since playstation 3 and xbox 360 is at it's end of life.
Microsoft and Sony should at least disable the hypervisor
to allow for
any
distro to be compiled and run on both consoles.
This is because, even if it is not as powerful, it is still
relatively strong enough to be used as a normal
computer. (Especially PS3 with it's CELL architecture,
which would be useful for doing accelerated scientific
computing on the cheap)
This will be very useful in keeping older consoles away
from
the scrap heap. Or at the very least be useful in say...
getting
more computers access in developing countries.
Or allowing for a real demoscene to occur with consoles.

I agree. Sadly the balance of the law favors consumption
rather than sustained use. |

It's all the rights thing: should you be able to use a product that you paid for in a manner other than the original purpose ? |
|
|
Should you be able to use AOL CD's as Frisbees ? record over a Gone With the Wind videotape ? Use the Human Genome Project to create mutant minions ? |
|
|
The matter, in regards the PS3 at least, is currently in Appeals court in California. |
|

//Use the Human Genome Project to create mutant
minions ?// Wait - that's not OK? |
|
|
Also, what is a hypervisor? And surely some hack has
broken it already? |
|
|
You'd soon see new games written for these, and
the poor schmucks would be out of a job and would
have to take up an actually beneficial living instead. |

What's the Appeals court thing btw FlyingToaster? If they
win, will all PS3 be liberated from the oppressive hands of
$ony? :D And will the same apply to Micro$oft? |

I googled "PS3 Linux" and clicked on the wikipedia article that came up. |

By the time you've found a whole bunch of PS3s, cleared a
few shelves for them, looked through drawers for extension
cord and power strips, networked them together, finished
the network trouble shooting, installed linux... the cost of
computing will have fallen. And you can just use a couple of
serious graphics cards in a pc. PC computing power/$ has
historically been better than consoles, consoles are
released infrequently whereas there's always a new better
graphics card. |
