I think it would be pretty easy to design guns that could only fire when pointed in the direction of a special target. But that wouldn't necessarily guarantee someone wasn't in the way. |

But in general, if guns are going to have any value, it's because we can use them as needed to shoot at will. So I regard this as counterproductive as the other gun limitation mechanisms. |

Gun accidents usually happen because people defeat the safety features of the weapon or somehow find a way to circumvent certain procedures that are intended to prevent an accidental discharge. |

There are some sci-fi schools of thought featuring smart guns and ammo: You wave the gun in the general direction of your targets, it reviews the picture and launches self-correcting bullets at appropritate times and they track down their targets. |
