The fireman's pole remains probably the fastest method ever
of getting downstairs in a hurry short of outright falling. In
effect you sort of are, but you can hug the pole to slow your
fall to stop* at the bottom.
But how to get back up? RockCo proudly unveils the reverse-
capable fireman's
pole. A circular plug of the floor
sleeving the pole at its base senses weight and lifts
hydraulically to the level of the floor above. When it senses
the weight has been removed it descends back into the floor.
It is the responsibility of the user to make sure all hands, feet
and other possible protuberances do not extend beyond the
circular plug. Doing so would cause bodily damage and
discolor the apparatus and floor.

Use a hoist rope and something that braces you under your
arms. You hug the rope same as going down and pull yourself
up now that you are "lightweight" as one goes up the other
comes down. |

In the old Batman TV series (or possibly the movie from the
same era), Batman & Robin had rocket (IIRC) powered
platforms to go back up the BatPole. |
