Fake Gunshot / Awoken Residents Burgler Deterrence

Recording of people in the house saying they see the prowler. Fake gunshot optional.

NOTE: Modified to be mainly about the recording of alerted people in the house being triggered by movement. The fake gunfire thing is optional.

The universal language for "Don't break into this house." is a gunshot, sound of a bullet whizzing by and an apparent bullet hitting the ground in proximity to the trespasser.

Completely legal and safe, sensors detect a prowler, the the gunshot rings out and the bullet hitting nearby effect is completed by a small explosion of dirt from one of a series of air tubes placed around the property.

Might even have a recording play from the house (in a hillbilly voice) "Oh hell Clem, you can't shoot worth a damn, gimme that thing."

Right? How fun would these be to record?

Ya know, I was halfway kidding with this but having recordings of people in the house talking when movement is sensed? I think that's the real idea here.

A light going on automatically? Everybody knows that's a sensor automatically turning the light on, not somebody with a shotgun that happens to be looking out the window at 3 in the morning that turned it on. But a recording of somebody whispering loudly "Clem, wake up, I think there's somebody in the yard, git yer gun!", THAT would scare me away if I were a burglar.

       Timezone stuff.

1- "Somebody's in the yard, git yer gun!"

2- Single shot with puff of dirt adjacent to the sensed intruder.

3- "Aww, hell, git the machine gun!"

4- Machine gun recording syncronized with puffs of dirt. (link)

While I am DEFINITELY in favour of theatrics & other tricks to piss of thieves, I (unfortunately) suspect that this will probably result in a nice visit from some lovely people dressed in black with SWAT written on their fronts.

       Hmm, good point.

Have law enforcement be aware and be notified when it's triggered? "ATTENTION: THIS IS ONLY FAKE GUNFIRE AGAIN AT THE REMULAC3 RESIDENCE! THIS IS JUST FOR FUN! YOUR RESPONSE IS NOT REQUIRED!".

       Just use rimshots!

       (not rimfire!)

I'm not sure you could recreate gunfire with a sound system of reasonable cost. Looking into it, a 9mm is around 160dB, while a full 4x12 guitar rig comes in at the 110-135dB range if I remember correctly. So you'd be better off with a system that fires a live blank. Authentic sound, and the sniff of gun smoke drifting through the air would add to the effect.

Here's my experience with gunfire in a street environment: it's not scary sounding like in the movies. It's "Pop pop!" not "Boom Boom!". If it's loud and booming it's an M-80s or other pyrotechnics. If it's a popping noise somebody's shooting.

Unless you're next to it of course.

I had a business a block away from East Palo Alto during the crack wars. Gunfire was actually a thing you heard from time to time.

But yea, that little round is moving a lot of air very quickly. Might be better off with blanks as you suggested.

Here in what's left of Detroit they're wanting to add a few more 'gunshot detection systems' which to me sounds like applying band-aids to a 50-cal wound.

I'm not sure, but I believe the first place they tried that was in my home town. Let me check...

Yup. EPA! Birthplace of technology to help the world.

Actually the company that actually made them wasn't in EPA, was across the bay in Fremont. But still...
