Mini submarines, emblazoned with sponsors' logos racing around an underwater course, through tunnels etc.

Spectators in big underwater grandstands built in air-filled glass tanks.

Demolition Derby Version http://www.halfbake.../idea/Bumper_20Subs
This should work for the figure eight course and the demolition derby version I think. [zigness, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 05 2004]

       I'm there. [link]

I'd go to this. I find F1 a bit dull, but vertical overtaking has got to add a new dimension to the sport.

I think you'd have to have the whole course enclosed in tunnels of some sort, otherwise how do you know what the boundrys are? The tunnels could narrow and widen to restrict/allow passing. Though tunnels to present a problem if someone needs immediate help...

       Very very good idea.

He likes it! He likes it! He really really likes it!

If bionic dolphins were racing, I'd pay to see it. That thing is hot!
Cheekio, May 31 2004

This is a great idea, and overtaking can happen by either the traditional left-right shimmy, or the up-over-and-down trick. Much more interesting than that F1 bollocks.

(Virtually any idea that earns an illustration by [bristolz] is going to get a + from me. This one looks like it could have been featured on the cover of Popular Science or possibly cribbed from the secret archives of Tom Swift's lab.)

Great, but why do it underwater? If you're gonna be using tunnels (which is a cool idea, like 3D roads!) then just have the tunnels on the surface and fill them with water. Would look super cool at night, with only the tunnels lit up.

If you can get a crazed undersea Montoya bashing everybody around along with Sato blowing his engine...
thumbwax, May 31 2004

you could use my bumper subs idea for a demolition derby.
zigness, May 31 2004

       Don't hold your breath...er wait a sec.

[spacemoggy] That would look super cool at night - nice idea.
[bris] Lovely picture - perhaps a croissant on it somewhere, indicating HalfBakery sponsorship?

So like the air race but underwater and all racing together.

I think it would be cool to have SeaBob races, where the riders have small airtanks and have to come in for pitstops to change air and batteries. See [Linky]

This reminds me of my Bumper Subs idea.
zigness, Nov 01 2007

       Really neat idea.

I would imagine that the subs would use the same cushion of air bubbles that high speed torpedoes use, making advertising invisible.

       Yay for invisible ads.

       How about 230mph under water?
link.
Ling, Nov 01 2007

Spacemoggy, don't forget the water pressure!

       I'm + 7

(Ling's link is on the blink. Google finds a seemingly unrelated article about neural networks for computing hydrodynamics. What was it pointing to?)
