I live on the third floor of an 11 story building. The elevators right by me have floor indicators, telling me where the elevators are sitting. Often, the elevators will be in motion, and as a result, I take the stairs over the incredulous stares of the passengers in the elevator, who were forced to
stop at the third floor.
There are also times when the elevators do not appear to be in motion (say one is stopped at the lobby, and one at the 8th floor). In this case, I surreptitiously press the down button and lazily float down those two flights.
Sometimes, however, just as I am pressing the button, one of the elevators begins to move. Now I am in a situation where I have already pressed the button and committed the unwitting passengers in the elevator to stopping at my floor. Depending on how high up the elevator is, I either wait it out and deal with the sarcastic comments ("Oh, was the third floor too hard to walk down from?"), or make a mad dash down the stairs to the first floor.
None of this would happen if I could simply press a "cancel" button and continue on my way. In addition, a very useful analogue for the *inside* of the elevator would be a similar button, to be used when you accidently press the 8th floor button instead of the 10th, or the 2nd floor instead of the lobby.

Sounds like you need an incredulity cancel button, too. |

Embarrassment never stopped anyone in my building from getting on at the second or third floor. |
|
|
But we did this before somewhere - nope, my mistake - that was for inside the elevator cab. |

What always bugged me was folks who get on an elevator in a 10 story building, just to go one floor down (like from 8 to 7 or something). No wonder Americans are, in general, overweight. |

My problem with elevators is someone gets in there and pushes every single button before they sneak off the thing. |

|
Modern elevators will cancel multiple calls from inside the elevator car if it detects no load in the car. |

I wish they'd put one of those in this dorm! |

krelnik: what really bugs me is having to use the elevator to go one floor, because all the stairwell doors are locked down no re-entry for security purposes. |

Agreed. A better solution is to have a card-swiper system for the building, so people can use the stairwells but only have access to the floors they are supposed to. |
