I can't use chopsticks, I admit it, if I was Chinese I'ed starve, but I LOVE Chinese food! What am I to do? Ok here's my idea. Take one piece of wood, flat, and round the ends into rounds, like chopsticks, but leave the middle flat, then steam the wood and bend the center until the ends come almost togther and clamp the wood until the bend sets, then you have a chopstick, that is u shaped, springy so you can grab food and you won't drop one stick while handling the other, these could also be made industrally about as cheaply as the disposable wooded chopsticks, and would make it easier for us gwai lo to eat chinese food.

Entirely unrelated, except for its connection to your user name and its profound halfbakedness. [spidermother, Jun 11 2009]

How about two short metal tubes which are held together with a spring? It will easily fit into your pocket, and you just push the chopsticks into the tubes when you get to the restaurant.

Something like this exists. Hunting for links...

//Chindogu// I love the phrase "transcend the realms of the merely almost useless" in the tenets of Chindogu. They are our kindred spirits.

Yes, chopsticks for dummies exist, but I haven't heard of your design before. The central spring section would have to be made thinner than the rest. I imagine split bamboo would work well; disposable chopsticks seem to be made of machined wood, which would tend to split if bent. Have you tried making them?

Fo some reason, I think that eating with chopsticks is one of the more civilized things you can do.

       But I'm a kind of a redneck.

Kids are usually taught to use chopsticks by putting a spacer between the sticks and a rubber band round the end.
