When hiking, a heavy pack spoils the fun. If you travel through several latitudes, elevations, and/or seasons, you need to carry geer for hot, cold, or wet conditions. All of this adds weight. What if some of the products in your pack, and the pack itself, could be used for 2 or more purposes?
Your
sleeping bag could be fitted with strategically positioned zippers that allow you to convert it into a one piece, hooded, body length, warm garment. Another possibility would be to have a tent that could be folded into a backpack, assembling the frame from the poles and pegs, the straps having been used for the guy ropes.
It would be like not having to carry 2 of the heaviest, bulkiest items, The tent and the sleeping bag.

Much of the dual-purpose gear that I've seen is fair-
to-poor in both functions. |

Not to say that it isn't worth trying again [+] |

The Bundeswehr developed and issued a highly successful sleeping bag with arms which doubles as a quilted waterproof coat. Very good indeed. |

I used a (rather large) parka as an indoors sleeping bag for ages. Combo tent/backpack sounds interesting [+] |

Indeed. However, if it's raining, and the tent/backpack is soaking wet, then the unfortunate user is compelled to stuff ll their kit into a bag that's already soaked, and has no shelter while they're doing it. And if it's not raining, there's not so much need for a tent anyway. |
