You could also have two linked treadmills facing opposite each other like a log rolling competition sort of. Then the competitors could stare each other in the face during the battle.

       Me likey.

Not necessarily competitive - running next to someone at the same speed seems quite friendly [+].

Brilliant! Sucks to get a faceful of rubber, though.

[+]Lead, follow, or eat the smelly rubber.

On a side note I'd like to see a treadmill programmed to match pace with various animals. I've read that a man can beat a horse to the quarter mile mark, it would be fun to try my hand at it...and could I outrun a grizzly, how 'bout that cougar? Even though the answer would be no in most cases it would be cool to see how far you could get.

       Also useful for doublewide people.

       This is a true gem.

//Also useful for doublewide people.// This is what I was thinking when I read the title. I've been watching "Biggest Loser" lately.

       Oh, (+).

Hey, could you grab the handrails, lean back and slam on the breaks?
MisterQED, Jan 20 2010

[=] I SO wanted to give it a [+], but how is it competitive? You can't run faster to change the speed - it's not a log role - and [Lurch] said practically nothing about his invention.

For instance, is your idea really to have an "Dynamically Velocity Adjustable Feedback Contrivance Machine" - an idea in itself? (If you run faster, the 'moving walkway', ere treadmill - goes faster?)

Can I give the bun to [RayfordSteele], instead, for his Funny-Ass comment?
Speed Razor, Jan 20 2010

//said practically nothing about his invention.// Some people like the mental image they get reading a short idea. Some don't. Looking at the bun/bone ratio I got, I'm satisfied. I know I miss some people's humor spot. It's inevitable.

[hippo] - "friendly mode" - two belts, declutched; run side by side with someone who's a faster or slower runner - more fun.

[IT] - //in terms of ... endurance// two belts, with an over-running clutch geared to a coiled spring. When the distance differential reaches a set magnitude (say, a mile or 5k or 30 furlongs or whatever) the spring is released and the "trailing" belt "catches up" almost instantaneously.

[Lurch], I think your treadmill should be used to settle civil litigation.
