Dolphin Telephone Network

Solar powered buoys that let dolphins communicate to other by making sounds.

Make a series of solar powered communication platforms linked with a satellite network. Dolphins, whales, and killer whales can use it to communicate from any communication platform to any other communication platform using sounds, similar to making a phone call.

An API will be used to give commands to the device: Sounds will be used as numbers and numbers commands will be numbered. * What is this phone number? * What time is it? * What day is it? * What year is it? * What is this location? * Make a phone call to another location. * Given a phone number, return its location. * Check your messages based on your name. * Leave a message to someone else based on their name. * Broadcast a message to all locations that are not busy. If another dolphin responds, start a phone call.

We would capture a few dolphins and teach them how to use it. Then release them so they can teach other dolphins.

If it works, we could listen in on their conversation and learn about them.

//We would capture a few dolphins and teach them how to use it.// Don't like that bit. Dolphins should be left alone and not "captured" for any reason. This action causes them great stress. Find a more inventive way of encouraging them to use your new devices without any "capturing" or confinement.

Dolphins have regional accents & dialects, so this might not work as hoped over the long distances you expect.

Going to have to find a way to hold their interest - during my diving days circa 2005 my mentor Al Chelberg spotted a pod of a few hundred dolphins vigorously headed somewhere. He motored the boat out ahead of their course and dropped me in the water in their path.

It was fun, but I could only hold a given dolphin's interest for five or ten seconds before they'd race off to keep up with their buddies. I sang, stood on my head and twirled, waved my arms, all underwater while (mostly) holding my breath. I have the bell sitting next to my keyboard that he put in the water and rang, and they came to check that out also, but only briefly.

As are you. Angry comments cheerfully withdrawn.

Nice. (+) Welcome to the sanitarium. We have Jello at three.

The orcas will use this to coordinate attacks on yachts. I approve.

Actually they'd probably use it to coordinate attacks on confused dolphins who are wondering why these buoys keep trying to talk to them.

Sounds like you may have been trying to hold the attention of a bunch that had somewhere to be? a bit like standing on the pavement and wondering why none of the motorists on their way to work will stop to watch you juggle perhaps? consider the possibility that attempting to hold the interest of a dolphin that's not on a specific 'mission' to be somewhere for something or some reason might be somewhat easier?

//Sounds will be used as numbers and numbers commands//

You're going to inflict Siri on them? Why not just buttons?

They'll more than happily push buttons and it has the added advantage of not accidentally dialing their aunt while they're trash talking about how annoying she is to their sister.

cool idea, though don't I recall that the whales song goes on for miles?

I've heard their next target will be a big luxury yacht called Frequentist; it'll be a harder target than their last one, because the captain takes nothing for granted.

Yes, as I understand it he has a clear sense of porpoise.

It's a killer whale of an idea. Don't know if it would work orcas some problems.
