<Preface> Our faithful, lovely, calm 10yo Staffordshire terrier has terminal bowel cancer. I had it confirmed this morning so we are treating him to a great time before he goes.

____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____

This is a sorta assisted bucket list service for your pet pooch, or cat, or parrot, as you wish.

A companion, hired by the day, with a spending limit, to give your best friend the sort of experiences only being there can buy... a walk on the beach; a soft-serve ice cream cone; a brief tour of the reject bin at a smallgoods factory, or something else that you know your pet would love but getting there is simply beyond you, in terms of scheduling.

I started this morning, for Atlas, as we left the vet. He got a soft serve ice cream cone at McDonald's, and ate it on the back seat of the car.

Later this morning, a chocolate-coated biscuit. i.e. One of the ones he has absolutely coveted for the last ten years, but has been denied because, well,

Dogs + Chocolate = NOT GOOD

Tonight is pizza night, at a picnic in the park with a couple of our friends with whom he stays occasionally.

We have a very lovely character here at Camp Teacup who, after taking too many shots in the line of duty became unable to return to the trenches, became for dogs exactly as you describe, but a little earlier on.

She cares for elderly, disabled and fragile dogs, which often include by default those at the end of life. One families dog(s) at a time while the owners are away or in hospital--we're not a kennel! <shudder>--they live in the house, get to lay on the couch (and bed), watch films featuring dogs and other wildlife. Random small shards of bacon every so often. Dawdling walks along wildlife trails. A prequel to Doggy Heaven, if you will.

We call her The Fairy DogMother. (somewhat Baked, but not WKTE so, [+] )

That is a very cool thing, [Sgt Teacup]

Indeed; Geoffrey Dahmer was amazing, but not in a good way . .

So gratifying, knowing that my mere presence causes [8th] to begin to shed his skin, yet again.

One small niggle is that one of the things dogs like is being with their own familiar people. At least, my dog always seems happiest when everyone's home. So this sort of service might be better not delegated.

[+] anyway, for the sentiment, and welcome back.
pertinax, Oct 30 2020

It depends on the character of the individual dog ; some are perfectly happy to be with complete strangers, providing that they are entertained, or with othe dogs, or in familiar surroundings.

Others do indeed become very anxious and upset when parted from their usual human. It's a case of "Some do, some don't".

That's what we have found, [8/7]

Atlas is happy with pretty much *anyone* who is kind to him.

All ideas that promote kindness to animals get my support. Meanwhile, sorry to hear about your pet. When my first cat had to be put down, I asked the vet to put me down at the same time, and I was being serious. Mind yourself UB - happy days to enjoy remain.

// put me down at the same time //

Pity you didn't contact us, we'd have done both jobs for free.

^ TRULY an unkind anno, [.875] but you probably knew that.

Oh. This kind of thing gets me right in the feels. My family did the same sort of thing with a border collie with cancer. A weekend by the sea chasing balls in the waves and half the contents of the bbq was our version of this.

Awww, [what], you say such lovely things, you silver-tongued charmer you ...

This is not a sympathy bun, it's a bun for a wonderful idea with loving intent, from a dear old friend to his best dear old friend, Atlas. May he always be at your heels, with a glimmer in his eye and a lick for your hand.

I'm so sorry. As you know there are no magic words to make this pain be gone, so I'll just leave a little love here, for you both, instead. (It's also nice to know that you have never really left, you come back for important life thingies, like Paul Dear, and Atlas. Two very fine men.)
