A major part of the expense of air travel is the take off and landing of the jet aircraft. It's incredibly inefficient and uses a lot of fuel.
For the vertical part of the travel, it's more efficient to use lighter-than-air-craft travel.
Then, once you rise up to a floating hangar, modern
jets will take your horizontally to your destination.
See the link for 'Airline Airlift'. There was some question about how exactly the jet-powered aircraft would capture the cabin that was lifted by the balloon. This a possible solution to that question.

I think this was tried before, but was poorly recieved. Pilots would need lots more training to get this accomplished. |

Have you looked into how much helium you need to support a single A380/747-800? Plus a stiff enough surface for them to land on and take off from (arrestor wires and catapults don't work well with passenger aircraft)? And lift capacity for their fuel to get it up to the airport?
Now update it to handle that much every 3-5 minutes. (Which probably means a minimum of 4 such aircrat, with the maximum being in the range of 20) |

I seriously doubt you're going to find that much helium lying around, and even hydrogen would be difficult (and a bad idea around jet engines). |
