Ballerinas put incredible strain on their toes and feet.
A dilatant ballet slipper would allow novices to be able to dance on their toes much earlier than normal and they could then concentrate more on the movements as the muscles and bones of their feet conform more gradually with less repetitive stress injuries.

now as for the thixotropic leotard...
