Once I had Norton Utilities, that had that agent keeping disks clean and tidy, but it was just anohter resident application eating processor power. Why there's not already a screensaver that would, beside showing some graphics, defragment your drive while you're away and when you come back, your computer is a bit faster and cleaner than before.

What if some application is using the hard drive while you're away?

//What if some application ...// Then it wouldn't defragment. My PC is idling along often enough to do all kinds of useful maintenance instead of searching for signs of aliens in intergalactic radio broadcasts.

It's a shame that that expensive piece of software doesn't have that option.

[kebecker] if you want to be more directly useful with your spare CPU cycles, download "folding@home", a spare-cylce program that simulates protein synthesis--useful for medical research.
