When a car hits a deer it causes serious damage to the vehicle. It can even be fatal to the people in the car.
New from the engineers at EvilCo, the deer puncher system. This may become popular enough to be offered as a option when buying a new car. The system consists of forward looking infrared
camera and computer processor controlling an array of airbags. The airbags are mounted inside the front bumper of the vehicle. A line of them spaced apart. When a deer collision is imminent the system deploys the appropriate airbag in the bumper to push the deer to the left or right of the vehicle. The airbags would deploy so that the force exerted would be at an angle to the front of the car.
In addition to the first system described, there would be a second array of airbags mounted inside the forward portion of the hood. Deer leap when running and this can be deadly to people in the car when the deer smashes through the windshield. To protect against this, the second array of airbags is designed to fire straight up. When the deer is detected to be a danger of going through the windshield, the system fires an airbag to launch the deer up and over the car.
Now instead of total-ling a car, you just replace an airbag when a deer incident occurs.
We're halfway there.

This might actually be kinder to the deer than the rigid metal bar ("bull bar" or "roo bar", depending on geography) which might otherwise be used. [+] |

Is there a moose puncher upgrade ? |
|
|
There probably is for Volvos. I seem to remember once reading a Volvo advertisement which claimed that simulated moose-collision was one of the test cases through which they put all new models. If not moose, it might have been elk - something bigger than a deer, anyway. |

Like the Anti Clause; "Off Comet, off Cupid, off Donner and Blitzen!" |

Or... A large iron fist on a long spring. Mount on all cars and teach
deer to stay away from roads. Should work on chavs too:-) |

I actually think is a decent idea. The airbags wouldn't
completely deflect an animal the size of a deer (unless the
cloth was made from molybdinum steel-reinforced spider
silk), but it would be very effect as a form of ablative
armor, soaking up much of the impact. [+] |

Needs a better name, though. |

Maybe, but I doubt it. When a deer gets hit full-on by a
car, the deer always loses. Even if it's just a couple of
broken legs (and a vet can be found in time to treat them),
successful rehabilitation isn't a guarantee. In most cases,
the deer is terminally injured and has to be put down by a
game warden (as was sadly the case when I hit the
Teleporting Deer with my motorcyle, which was only 1/5
the weight of a subcompact car). The airbags might soften
the blow, but probably not enough. |

I think so too. Any suggestions? I only used the name deer puncher to attract attention to the idea |
|

Airbags used as airbags would be pretty nifty on the front of a car. But airbags used to actually punch animals and people out of the way would require so much reinforcement to the chassis as to make the airbags (for the sake of protecting the car) redundant. A giant boxing glove on a spring would be more appropriate. |

//giant boxing glove on a spring// |
|

That's gonna look good on the assault charge sheet, after
the first road rage incident where one is deployed aganist
a pedestrian. |
|
|
Yeah, but about that giant boxing glove on a spring...is that available in an aftermarket add-on? |
|
|
I think they're made by Acme. |

I was hoping this would be an idea for "natural" deer
hunting. No sissy bows and arrows (guns are right
out). Just a rugged outdoorsy type, naked except for
a light smattering of foliage and/or mud, staring
down the confused deer and hoping one runs in the
wrong direction. |

Interesting, [sninc]. Anders Lassen, one of the early SAS
troopers, once tracked and killed a deer with just a knife.
Apparently that's a very hard thing to do. |
|
|
[sninctown] That wasn't my idea, but that is an idea. |
|
|
You could, however, install my system on a pickup truck and wait intill a deer leaps 'just right in front of the truck |

You could, however, install my system on a pickup truck and wait intill a deer leaps 'just right' in front of the truck. Then slam on the brakes so the deer lands in the bed of the pickup after being launched into the air by the airbag. In that senerio the system could be used for hunting... |
