The crust of each slice of bread would be slightly raised (a few millimeters) from the "meat" of the bread. This would allow sandwich ingredients to go inside the depression without spilling out the sides.

The ingredients of what? I'm sorry, I don't understand what you're describing. |
Sandwich ingredients, such as peanut butter and jelly which are sticky if you get them on your hands. Or, something like tomatoes, which could slip causing a sandwich to fall apart - no longer! |
how would you bake a bread shaped like this? |
I don't think you could, [po]. It'd just have to be regular bread sliced oddly. |
You could just press down the middle of each slice. |
You could achieve this by using a shaped press.
1) First cut your slices (slightly thicker than normal)
2) Deploy press, to indent the middle of each slice without affecting the crust.
3) Apply sandwich filling into the depression.
4) Consume heartily without fear of spillage.

Dratt [Idischler] you beat me to it! |

I think that's all you *can* do. Have things gotten so bad that a bread-baking idea needs to be deleted for bad science?!?! |
I think that you need to tell us how you will create this magical loaf. At the moment it is , ahem, pie in the sky.

Don't get me talking about foam now! |

There are always bread bowls.<link> |

How about a pita? just slice it open and fill with the ingredients of your choice. |

Something like [ldischler] and [zen_tom] described was what I had in mind. Alternatively, the (half)baker could slide a layer of something like aluminum-foil (perhaps something less malleable) into the center of the dough every centimeter or so (dependant on the desired slice width), then cover the slot. This might allow for each piece to be broken apart with a little tearing... |

Or you can forget about eating sandwiches forever and eat calzones instead. |
