If you've ever worked in a professional kitchen, you'll know that considerable time and effort is spent in rotating foods and throwing out perishables.

The day dot is my proposal. This large sticky coloured label has a dye within it that, on exposure to the air, slowly darkens in certain areas to reveal a white skull and crossbones on a black background.

The day dot comes in various types as some foodstuffs will last longer than others.

good link from [jutta], but the smart containers work via detecting the gases emitted by decomposition. If the food is in any state of decomposition, it's already dangerous.

This idea works via the official health inspector guidelines : if a food should be used in three days, put a three Day Dot on it.
