Crushed Ice Maker

Don't you wish you could have crushed ice without having to buy a new refrigerator?

Well I do, which is how I found this site in the first place. So here's my idea: Make an ice tray shaped in such a way, that the ice that comes out of it would be easily crushed by hand. perhaps with slats or something. Definitely a billion dollar idea, but I can't afford to build a factory. I'm just interested in having crushed ice. I have been using a hammer on regular ice, but there's a limit as to how long I can keep telling my neighbors I'm fixing something.

Quieter than a hammer, cheaper than a new refrigerator, more elegant than ice trays. [jurist, Oct 04 2004]

Old-fashioned aluminum ice cube trays http://www.rubylane...item/6344?froogle=1
As I remember (from the olden days) these seemed to crush the ice as the cubes came out. Was actually difficult to get whole cubes. [Klaatu, Oct 04 2004]

This may come 4 years too late.... but check this out! It is in german, but it doesnt matter. The product in question is absolutely cool, it is an easy way to create crushed ice, the producer is "fackelmann" and the product itself is called: crushed ice maker. Unfortunatelly the product lasts only aprox. 5x, after that the insides start to tear. So it is adviced to buy more than one!! [warita200, Jun 05 2008]

Here is some old ice cube trays that really work http://www.rubylane...grammypapa/item/121

It was already invented.:-( My family had one when I was a child and it worked great. I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to find someplace that still sells them. I came across this posting in an effort to locate one on line. It looked like a normal aluminum ice cube tray but had extra slats, just like you suggested. One pull of the handle and ~presto~ a tray full of crushed ice. And now...on with the search!

1/15/05 Found it! Not new but gently used on ebay. Paid a dollar plus shipping. Works great! Had my White Russian on crushed ice....really nice. Saw four more on the site, but didn't buy it due to high shipping costs. Go check it out!

Just buy a cheap ice maker and drive a truck over it. Since you're going to crush it anyway, you don't need an ice maker that actually works anyway.

Or you can swing a 2x4 against an 8lb. bag of commercially packaged ice cubes.
