Computer on a mouse

A whole computer on a mouse

A mouse, but inside its a modified PDA.

The mouse 'tail' is in fact your monitor output.

It would have bluetooth built-in so that you could use a bluetooth keyboard.

So at work (or wherever) you set up your "docking" station, but in fact all that would be would a bluetooth keyboard and a monitor.

More portable than a laptop and no need to synchronise like a PDA.

Obviously rubbish at getting at your documents on the go....

       What good would this do?

//the mouse "tail" is in fact your monitor output//

So does the "tail" do "sign language"? I think you need to explain this idea further.
dm01, Jun 30 2006

So you have a computer without a screen or keyboard.

But it has one video out lead, so you can plug it into a monitor, bluetooth would be able to pick up a keyboard and the processor, disks, memory, OS would inside the mouse - which would also be used in the normal way.

       Make more sense ?
monojohnny, Jun 30 2006

Apple is working on this for sure.

Next up is a computer in the power cable.
nihilo, Jun 30 2006

// Apple is working on this for sure.//

[nihilo] - was that "Apple are bound to be trying to make this" or "Apple are definately making this" ? Cos (and not just cos its my idea ;-) ) I would be really interested to see something like this.
monojohnny, Jun 30 2006

have you seen some of the hidden file servers built into backup battery supplies [nihilo]?
tcarson, Jun 30 2006

       I was being facetious.
Explaining that took all the fun out of it.
nihilo, Jul 01 2006

If I was to delete the last three responses, would that go some way to restore the fun?

(at least for other people reading (and fishboning) this idea) .....
monojohnny, Jul 01 2006

A modified version of this would be good, if it could do things like mount as storage on my laptop, control my TV, connect to a set-top box to play media on my stereo, etc.
ironfroggy, Jul 01 2006

[nihilo], i'm immune to facetiousness through sheer pretentiousness. ha!

There are plenty of "computer in the keyboard" designs out there. How is this better? You still need both objects.
Galbinus_Caeli, Jul 01 2006

Having a small screen built into the mouse would allow you to use it as a PDA when not near a larger monitor... I think it's a great idea, although plugging in a keyboard may be a little more involved. I suppose if you are treating the monitor as a docking station, then you could have a separate keyboard built in - or one of those laser ones...
spandit, Jul 01 2006

[Galbinus_Caeli] ; it would be slighter smaller than a keyboard ?

[spandit] - laser keyboard...mmmh nice enhancement - I guess the only problem would be the keyboard would be constantly moving as you moved the mouse !!

Although, maybe using some of the technology (somehow) [Galbinus_Caeli]'s "Constant Length Laser Pointer" could be used to keep the keyboard a constant size, even the mouse was being moved around...

(The Baddiel and Skinner song "it'll never work, it'll never work.." has just entered my head.....)
monojohnny, Jul 02 2006

/smaller than a keyboard/ Yeah, but you still need the keyboard. In fact the keyboard and monitor seems to me to be the irreducible minimum of a computer. A keyboard with a trackpoint or stroke pad duplicates the function of the mouse. So the CPU/storage could reside in one of those.

Also a mouse is the most easily lost or destoryed component of a computer. Putting the valuables in there just does not make sense to me.
Galbinus_Caeli, Jul 02 2006

Good point - although possibly you could have some functionality witout a keyboard - I agree.

The point about being damaged / lost is something I hadn't thought of though.
monojohnny, Jul 02 2006

But people carry data on losable stuff all the time. I've just lost my pen-drive, for example.

If it could plug directly into a TV as well as a monitor it would be much more widely usable.
For viewing or manipulating data, you often don't need a keyboard.

It would be great for presentations, for example.
Loris, Jul 03 2006

if your computer's in a snow globe, you can submerge it in oil for better cooling. you have to make sure that everything is completely sealed, and the oil might look a bit odd what with not being clear and all.
tcarson, Jul 03 2006

//why not shove some of the graphical sided of the computer gubbins into the monitor//

You mean move the graphics card into the monitor..?(or most of it)

Is the data-rate lower on the input side of a graphics card that on the output ? I dunno.

[spandit] Just found this. (see link) :-)

dammit [johnny]! i was about to link that!

since bluetooth is getting a lot faster and they have induction pad power options consider this:

a "workstation" that is itself a dumb terminal with built in internet,bt,etc., and a mousepad that hides an induction coil to keep the mouse charged...

       lets run with this...

the mouse auto connects to the display, then the display shows an icon of your mousepc, touch the screen icon and your online.voila.

check web pages, download info, print on the built in printer in the workstation or a shared printer around 10 public terminals in a mall or airport.

       then...get this...

you can use the keyboard on the terminal as well! it links thru the bluetooth.

       HA

and then, the impossible happens, think about it..... the mouse rings and you pick it up,flip it open and take the call cause the mouspc s ALSO your cell phone!!!

       *takes a bow*

only problem is the power needed to provide SVGA output to a conventional monitor.
WcW, Jan 22 2011

Who wants to carry a mouse around everywhere? If we're assuming there'll be a monitor and a keyboard at the destination, why not a mouse too?

Why not put a computer in something we already always carry around with us? Our mobile phones are the obvious candidate. Some smartphones already have video out and bluetooth peripherals, the upcoming Nokia Meego handsets will be able to run any X11 application. Being able to use our phones as desktop PCs is just around the corner.

BAKED! (Finally). Well - actually its even more a 'whole computer on a mouse' than this !

       https://youtu.be/bLjFe7Lzjs8
monojohnny, Jan 18 2019

I think you could somewhat easily bake this, including the phone call function. Get a phone that has MHL. Pair it with a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Disassemble the phone and discard the screen and frame. Possibly replace the screen with a smaller one. Put the remaining parts into the mouse, with its power shared with the mouse's and its USB port exposed. Connect it to a monitor via MHL (which is restricted HDMI over USB connectors). Bonus: It has internet access anywhere you can get a cell signal, without having to plug in a USB cell modem like you do with a laptop.
