Coffee Table Light

NOT a coffee table for people on a diet

In my lounge, I have a fairly large space around which sofas and chairs are arranged. It's great for entertaining, except that any drinks or snacks then have to be placed on the floor in the middle of the room.

I don't want a coffee table there permanently, it would get in the way. I don't have room for a coffee table elsewhere though, to be brought out when I'm entertaining.

The solution: a coffee table with lights in the ends of the legs - when you're not entertaining, it hangs from the ceiling and illuminates the room. When you're entertaining, you lower it to the floor and stand drinks and <ahem> light snacks on it. The legs then become low-level lights which personally I prefer when I have people round anyway.

The lights would need to be built into the legs so that they support the weight of the table, and there needs to be a waterproof aspect to it too, so that when drinks get spilt later in the evening the consequences aren't fatal...

This would be pretty cool in the shape of a flying saucer.

       Add a ceiling fan.

       Lazy susan ceiling fan!

I love things that descend automatically from the ceiling, as a result I know how hard they are to make. Would be worth it for this one though.

I was thinking of various degrees of expensivity with this: the basic model could just hang from a pulley and have a cable going across the ceiling and down the wall; for more money you could add features such as automatic raising/lowering, more fancy legs/light fittings, built-in dimmers, stuff like that...

The £10,000 plus models would come down stocked with cold gin and tonics and little bowls of salted nuts every time.

don't touch the nuts if you have any sense.

living as I do (well its sort of living) in a lickle place, I'd like all the furniture tackled to the ceiling to be pulled down at will.

It must be easier to just have the floor rise up to all the hanging furniture.

Or you could just provide ladders.

       or jet packs.

It makes me think of some candleabras I made once out of short pieces of surplus clear plastic, tied to varrying lengths of thread that were attached to a circular piece of plywood. They were hung from the ceiling and looked quite elaborate. Once they descended though, the pieces never untangled.

good way to let guests know that it's time to go home. Just send all the drinks and (ahem, snacks) up to the ceiling.

great big bun, by the way. I'd love a dinner table like this!!
