Obviously more exciting if the rowing,
sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, diving
and open-water swimming events happened
at the same time, in the same body of
water.

How about rolling them all into one event....? Dive off the top of a waterfall in a kayak equipped with a sail and a set of oars; negotiate the rapids that the deep pool drains into, emerging in open waters where you need to row like a crazy person until the wind picks up, at the headland, then sail around the bay before collapsing the sail, windsurfing towards the coast, and finally swimming ashore from a prescribed point. (can include being chased by crocodiles and pecking birds) |

Equestrian / tennis / track and field seem like natural
combos. Getting the horses to hang on to the pole vault
pole could be challenging though. |

Yes, and the winter Olympics biathlon (shooting and
skiing) similarly seems a bit pathetic - it should be
shooting *while* skiing.
[RS] Not sure about
including pole vault, but tennis played by players on
horseback would be interesting - a real test of
tennis and dressage skills. |

How about painting rings on the discus and using it as
a target for the archery? |
|
|
Yes, but discus/trap shooting seem a more symbiotic
combination |

|
100m x javelin would be another natural pairing. |
|
|
Sailing x javelin, you know, like they used to do for real back
in the day when the Olympics were invented. |

Javelin x javelin: opposing teams confrontational? |
