PDF-417 barcode is in the public domain and can encode up to 1800 ASCII characters and 1100 binaries. Classified ad publisher can squeeze more marketing information in confined space and save advertising money. If chaining enough PDF417 on several pages on a newspaper, movie maker can publish trailer
on newspaper and save money on TV advertising. Similarly, this barcode can encode music, discount coupon, firmware, food stamp, scripts, database and so on. Decoding is done through flatbed scanner or USB handheld portable scanner.

And who's going to bother to look at it? |

This is likely to happen with RFIDs |

Yeah... I like...but you have to scan and read ALL the classifieds to know which ones you wanted to read.
*scans paper*
"Can you BUY that?!?! Oh, wait, I scanned the personals again. Darn." |
"Johnny, put that down right now ! You don't know WHAT kind of things people have barcoded !" |
" But mom, I was just reading the funnies....." |

Kind of removes the point of a paper-based medium, doesn't it? My computer monitor has much more comfortable graphics capabilities than some (likely expensive) scanner. |

Text is actually denser than most Pdf-417s, especially at lower font sizes. A 1600-char pdf-417 is about 3 inches, by three inches. Most humans can read text that dense, it's a small font size, but readable. |
The advantage of pdf-417 is that it is machine readable, and has built in error correction. Once optical character recognition gets good enough to not need error correction, PDF-417s will be pretty much gone. |

Plus of course barcodes in general will be phased out by RFiD in many applications. |
