Digital television boxes (at least, in the UK) increasingly have support for multiple tuners, memory and processing power. Thus, it should be simple to add common edit transitions to the simple channel change. When you change channels you could have a slow dissolve, a wipe, a fade out/fade in, and so
on.

A morph? I think that's what it's called. The trouble is, you need to (or at least you used to need to) define anchor points that linked the two images together - like eyes, tip of nose etc. What with image recognition in the state it's in today, you may be able to do this automatically, I don't know.
