Fabricate a tire that grows new tread like a "Chia-Pet" when it gets wet. Must be durable to withstand the constant torture of the highway surface.
This would be perfect in wet climates where you need tread for traction!

[bungston] - I would suggest this is a different idea. I understood it as a tyre where the tread depth increased when wet, so that you get the performance benefit of slick tyres in the dry and the safety benefit of deeply treaded tyres in the wet. As such it is an eminently sensible idea. |

Right you are, [suct]. Perhaps the same technology that allows those small sponge capsules to grow into dinosaurs etc when soaked could be used for the Chia Tire. |
