And for emphasis, when people won't get out of your way.
Hydraulophone

Modern car horns are typically mounted under the hood or
in the left fender; not places where you'd traditionally
want to deploy pressurized napalm. |
|
|
This could be like a wind instrument but using
napalm instead of air. Or the flame and the sound could
just coincide, like a very large can of wd40
mounted on the hood of a car, with an amiable nozzle and
some king of igniting mechanism. The horn, the spray of
the wd40 and the lighting mechanism would be
synchronized so that when you toot tooted on your horn
there would be a corresponding blurt-woosh blurt-woosh of
flame in the direction that the nozzle was pointed. |
|
|
If the napalm actually made the sound maybe it could be
based on the principle of Steve Mann's Hydraulophone, the
(linked) instrument that uses fluid vibration to produce a
sound (which I by the way have played but still don't
understand the principle of.) |

I know you're not one to toot your own horn... now I know why. Utterly practical says I, and oh-so-bunworthy! [+] |

How did I miss this? I want one that shoots from the front and one that shoots from the back of my car! [+] (to keep tailgaters back!) |

I got this idea while waiting impatiently behind other
subway customers on the escalator out of the subway,
anxious to smoke a cigarette and nervously flicking my
lighter. #selfincrimination. |

Air horn driven by LPG ... butane or propane. Spark igniter in the throat of the horn. |

Hmmm, church organ operated by flammable gas ... ? |

Good Heavens, [8th], you're back! I thought it would take more fluffy-kittens-in-a-blender type ideas to bring you out of hiding... <GROG wanders off, inexplicably disappointed> |

A regular car air horn, supplied with pressurised gas from a disposable butane cylinder via a modified blowlamp chassis, provides an acceptably loud, clear and pure-ish tone, and a spectacular burst of flame when an ignition source is presented to the bell. |
|
|
For durability, a metal horn is greatly preferable as the plastic ones tend to distort and char after a few uses. |
|
|
For personal comfort, a remote operating trigger is essential as it is surprisingly easy (and rapid) to lose superficial body hair from the arm (sorce of ignition: basic cigarette lighter) and the face (eyebrows gone (again)). Further, the distinctive odour invites comment from cow-orkers. |
