Sorry I don't have a good picture or animation or video for this. I am
in the process of waiting for the 3d prints of the shapes, but have
printed them out a long time ago and know that they work.
The second shape under "new shapes" at the linked page is a
bisected equilateral cone in which
one half of the cone has been
rotated 120 degrees. If two mirrored versions of this shape are
rolled against each other in the hands, the resulting motion is
perfectly rotational - the shapes roll against each other smoothly
and compleat a full rotation.
The resulting profile is of two halves of a valentines heart shape
splitting and coming back together again over and over.
The motion is also meditative and theraputic and engaging.

I can't tell what shape you're referring to in the link.
However, at work someone printed out (on a
Makerbot) a 3D heart consisting of intermeshed
gears. When twisted, the gears turn in synch,
destroying and then re-composing the heart. |

Very much like that, but without gears or bearings, and
with only two parts. The two mirrored parts are actually
types of sphericons, according to the originator of the
sphericon who I consulted with on the project. |

I like to think that my project was the ancestor of the
breaking heart gear since I invented it at a 3d printing
company I was working at in 1998. |
|

The shape is one-sided, like a sphericon, but with only one
edge rather than two. The two halves of an equilateral
cone are twisted 120 degrees against each other until a
point from the base of the cone meets the peak of the
other half of the cone. |

Another sphericon relative that can be manipulated in a
similar manner can be made by joining a half-double cone
and half of a cylander. Two versions of this appear in that
same image. One has a profile that morphs from a circle to
a square as it is rotated -- a squircle. |

Also I printed out a rudimentary structure to imitate what
my hands were doing during my meditative manipulations
of the shapes, but only for the original sphericon. A
picture is displayed on the same page, entitled "sphericon
machine." |

The company I was working with was called zcorp, recently
swallowed by 3Dsystems. |

On a related note, we just got a publically-available 3d
printer, which I
think is a
3dsystems printer, at the MLK public library where I work in
Washington DC, which prints out parts for between one and
five dollars, and from which I am waiting for a print-out of
the breaking heart machine. There is an understandable
queue. |

I wonder if Cambridge Central Library is planning to
go that way... |
