There are two components to the system; a tank containing butter or margarine pressurised with air or a CO2 bulb, and a knife with a hollow blade which is connected to the tank by a thin flexible tube. There is a valve in the knife handle, and an array of small holes in one face of the knife (left and
right handed versions available).
As the user cuts their slice of bread they squeeze the handle which opens the valve. Butter is exuded from the holes in the blade and onto the slice of bread.
This could also be used to slice and butter croissants all in one neat economical movement. A must for busy kitchens.

In the event of a breadknife accident it could be difficult to explain to the doctor why you buttered the inside of the wound.
Are you by any chance trying to tempt people into offering you a ready-buttered & sliced croissant? That sort of trick won't work on me you know. |

alternatively, you could butter the end of the loaf and then cut it. The only disadvantage is that the slice is almost definitely going to fall on its buttered side, but it's got to be a hell of a lot easier than squeexing a valve mechanism while trying to cut the bread |

Sappho: Just a small trigger under the handle, where the inside of the index finger naturally presses on it ? Or maybe a thumb button. Since the butter is fed under pressure, very little force would be needed. This is a release valve not a pump. |

on a similar bent: a toaster that butters the toast as it pops up (some sort of roller mechanism). Time for breakfast... |
