This idea was inpired off of Popular Science's article on mind controlled robots (see link).
A small hole is drilled in the head of both vic--er, 'subjects', and a series of electrodes are implanted in their cerebrums. The more electrodes the better.
The electrodes are then wired to a multiconductor
patch cable, linked between the two subjects. This establishes an electrical connection between the brains of the two subjects.
The theory is that the two people will be able to share some form of fleeting thoughts, and with enough practice, be able to hold conversations with one another. Given enough time, their mentalities might even merge.

Not really a new idea

Would it be possible to upload and download data at free will? |

You could wire a whole bank of heads together like the Overmind in Douglas Hill's Legionary Quartet. |

All of our philisophical problems are going to be solved by
changing the language so that it works as an internal
language as well as an external one - so that these two
people can talk within itself after their mentalities
merge. The problem with language is that it is so "I"
heavy. "Us and them" would be more democratic, or "I
and I," I guess, if you want to assuage the republicans.
That Bob Marley, always the diplomat. Maybe if we just
replaced all pronouns with "I and I" all of our problems
would shake out. |

Now, you know a game of "king of the hill" will be played before thoughts are shared. |

I thought brain activity was an electro-chemical activity. Will we be swapping brain / body fluids? [looks around the conference room for interesting female to sit next to] |
|
|
All that electro-chemical activity can be
translated pretty quickly into regular old information and
communicated
over a distance, for instance in love at first sight, so
bandwidth shouldn't be a problem. Merging mentalities
will be a matter of developing
a language that lets individuals share modules through
the senses. It
won't involve breaking the skin barrier. |

You could test this theory with a two headed snake. If you cover one head, and teach the other head something (for example: flashing light = food coming, or shock coming) with the covered head learn it at the same time? If so, that would suggest that connected brains can directly share information. The question is how to connect them. |
|
|
The idea is to connect two brains together with wires. They will share electrical activity, but not chemical. This could be tested on monkeys easily enough, since there is no danger save possible infection from the implanted electrode. |
|
|
Not sure if that would be the monkey's point of view. |

We have a whole category for this topic. The problem becomes one of practical scalability of the amount of sensors needed to transact a meaningful thought. The brain is pretty darn complex and largely unique to each individual, and I'd think that if you go randomly wiring 2 sections of it together, the subjects would go quite mad. Proceed with caution. |

I love the way this idea focuses on the cable, glossing over the brain implant aspect. When we are able to make implantable electrode arrays that would work for this I hope we will at least give the vic--er, "subjects" bluetooth or something. |
