The revenge of written media:
Just finished Animal Dreams, and was thinking that no movie would do good to the book. Rather, if someone read the book out loud, while showing images of Nicaragua, of Arizona, of old spanish ladies, blue eyes, alfalfa or however its spelled blowing in the wind, a helicopter...
You could add music and sound effects. Would probably cost very little to produce, and leave a lot for the imagination to complete.

(-) but not because I think it's an unreasonable idea. I'm quite into audiobooks these days and some of the better ones have accompanying sound effects. I like to just lay back and listen to them and I think that adding images too would just be a distraction. |

Many a time good books that are turned to movies have various locations mentioned in them, or some kind of tool that is not commonly known.
Also for the human touch of seeing the person who is reading the book to you. |

I had a similar idea to this a few weeks ago. The idea was video tracks (made using traditional animation) to go along with audiobooks (which often, like animation, feature voice characterizations). |

This used to be how children's television worked in the UK: some if not entirely paternal than at least familiarly avunclar voice would read a story over a barely animated scene, usually featuring a bear experiencing what would, if the DVD were ever released, be described on the packaging as "mild adventure". |

Almost entirely unrelatedly, Bookread movie could in fact be baked by "bootmashing" (as I believe people stopped calling it in 2002) Koyaanisqatsi and Professor Emeritus of Funk Dizzy Deek Jarman's "Blue" in appropriate ratio. |

Ach, sorry if I was not clear. I was addressing the idea generally, rather than your own flavour of it. I must confess, I am not sure that I would watch either yours or pashute's because both limit the scope for the exercise by the "reader" (for want of a better word) of their imagination (which is, incidentally, the beef I have with audiobooks - that the voice of the reader is not the voice I hear when I read, which puts a barrier between me and immersion in the tale or text). |

Yeah I didn't really like either idea. I listen to audiobooks only because as a student I'm required to read too much as it is, so its a welcome change of pace while still being entertaining and having literary value (unlike the most of the crap on TV and radio at the moment). |

Hey! Your parents never read stories to you at bedtime?
A good storyteller can make any story great. Mark Twain once wrote an essay on that ("The difference"). This idea is EXACTLY the opposite of audiobooks, where just any student gets the job of reading these stories. |
