Basically it a machine that dispenses fresh, un-thumbed books. Would be cheaper than buying in bookstore, becuase of low overheads, and to compensate for the fact that you can't pick it up and read the blurb. The range would be limited, so only bestsellers or new releases would be stocked.
(??) book vending machine
http://www.bookzone...ire.cfm?wirenum=493 "Self-contained book printer that will take your book order, access the books digital files from where it is securely stored on the publishers Internet site, download, print, glue, trim and deliver the print-on-demand title to a waiting customer, all in slightly more than ten minutes." Book Trade Vending Machine
Book_20Trade_20Vending_20Machine Very close to this idea [hippo, Jan 26 2005, last modified Jan 27 2005]
Baked in Paris

Hmm not quite what I had in mind...I was thinking more along the lines of a snack machine on a train station. |
They have these in the metro stations in Barcelona but I'm unable to find a corroborative link, so you'll just have to trust me. |

Baked at JFK Airport in NYC. No cheaper - prices are identical. |

Right, with stacks of paperbacks; me too. I'm sure it's out there. The thing I found is, in it's own way, even cooler. |
I'm positive I've seen this in Japan, as well. |

Holy crap. That link is the coolest thing that I have ever heard. I think I have to go to Chesterfield, MO just to use it. I'd like to see it print War and Peace in 12 minutes. |

anyone has more links/information? this is great idea. |

[hippo], I'd call it significantly different. This idea calls for //a machine that dispenses fresh, un-thumbed books.// Your idea has (sorry) a few flaws, like getting someone's book filled with half of the contents of their lunch, or someone sticking barcodes on junkmail. |
Besides, the core feature of this is different than yours - one is a new method of sales, whereas the other is a new method of recycling. |

Don't get upset [engineer], I've removed the mfd tag. |

//you can't pick it up and read the blurb// |

Why not display the blurb on the front panel? |
