Just as an idea is marked in bold for first few days.

I like the concept, though I must admit I don't see how it would lower the number of troll-based events.
waugsqueke, Mar 12 2003

Not too much goes by unnoticed as it is.

       new baker here... what's a troll-based event??
DC, Mar 12 2003

It's when someone we decide we don't like comes along and winds us up and we are then horrible to him/her. Some 'bakers do it semi-competitively. Occasionally, it backfires, and the bakery collapses into an abyss of guilty handwringing. It's quite entertaining, though.

Welcome, DC. Please, keep off the 'grass, and do not feed the trolls.

How long would this go on? Being a relative newbie myself (or at least a newbie poster - i've been lurking for about a year) I think it may encourage flaming of any newbie ideas regardless of merit. As it stands you can check the status of any baker by clicking their name, as I'm sure you know. However, croissant if it was limited to a week.

       //what's a troll-based event??//
Some folks call trolls "assholes"

//How long would this go on?//
Same length of time as new ideas

I think the half-bakery culture could do with a little less tolerance for BULLYING. Old timers have a highly developed moral sense when it comes to hypothetical cruelties (i.e. facetious ideas that mention some possibility of harm to some living thing) but their moral sense is blunted when it comes to cruelty toward actual people visiting the group.

       I'm on the grass...

Robinism walking into any group you have to accept the rules and the characters, that and expect to make a few gaffs along the way, I know i have made a few and will in the future.
engineer1, Jun 22 2004

Engineer, thanks for your help. I do see what you mean, but I have trouble accepting a culture where bullying is taken lightly. I take bullying seriously, as you can see. The good part is that jutta herself is not a bully, so the bullies have no real power.

I have to admit that when I moderated a group, I made bullying strictly against the rules. Bullying messages, and the fights they provoked, were deleted and moved to another group, a kind of bullying morgue, so that people could see the damage done.
robinism, Jun 22 2004

Thank you po, but what about this lipstick on my collar?
robinism, Jun 22 2004

robin!?! excuse me but what are you rabbiting on about? there is no bullying here>
po, Jun 22 2004

Never mind my rabbitting on about bullying. There is no bullying here. It was just a figment of my overheated imagination.
robinism, Jun 22 2004

[robinism], the quote about semi-competitive bullying might need some context. At the time, there was a baker who managed to rile a significant number of others through onsite (and potentially offsite, too, though I'm not really involved in that network, so I can't say for sure) behaviour and, consequently, was comprehensively pilloried.

Thereafter the baker/troll disappeared and several bakers, unsure as to whether this disappeared individual was a troll or well intentioned, got themselves in a tizz about how new bakers are treated. Cue handwringing. This happens from time to time. Not for a while, though. Wait til the school holidays, that's always fun.

Bullying is best dealt with by ignoring the bullies. It's cheap advice, I know, but it's much easier to employ on the internet, where no-one's going to spit in the hood of your parka.
calum, Jun 22 2004

Thanks, Calum (is that short for calumny?). Now I understand the historical context of your previous annotation! You were referring to specific incidents. Again I blame the bullying culture for the cycle of regret you were in. The culture here is so permissive toward rudeness (or bullying, or hostile venting), there is no opposing force to put on the brakes. You guys got in a downward spiral, kind of a mob mentality, lost your moral bearings, and when you found them again, had pangs of regret.

You are right that ignoring bullies is a good way to handle them. Around here, bullies seem to have expected obeisance. Unless they have sticks and stones to back up the names they call me, I WON'T OBEY them.

       It's my name, is Calum.

Yaay! Go on robinism. Kick 'im again!
DrBob, Jun 23 2004

What an embarassing typo. I meant to say "Is that short for Calumet?" (You know, the brand of baking powder with the indian on it.)
robinism, Jun 23 2004

I like this idea, not so much for the purposes of spotting new-types, but on grounds of aesthetic consistancy. (Though I'd like to see what it looks like before I confirm my opinion with a bun)
zen_tom, Nov 27 2004

       "...aesthetic consistancy." Howzzat?
bristolz, Nov 27 2004

bristolz, see my view [link] - I have new bold ideas on the left, but no idea whether the posters are new or not, except for my browser occasionally highlighting links to the profile pages I've visited.

The consistancy part comes in because I'll have bold items in both columns.
