Once in a while, I'd like my computer to pop up with a message of good news. Such as:
- Don't worry, you've got PLENTY of hard disk space left!
- Oh, while you were out, I defragged your hard drive!
- You've got the latest (fill in hardware) drivers! Way to go!
- Can you believe
it? I've gone 14 days without crashing!
- I've checked and Microsoft doesn't have ANY security patches this week!

2, 3 and 5 are baked in Windows XP. |
[neelandan] not necessarily a WIBNI if it is somewhat useful (although on the HB this is definately a grey area) and bakeable. This is not pie-in-the-sky technology. |
[waugsqueke], I realize that XP does these things for me, but the only time I hear from it is when something is wrong. I want good news without asking for it! |
[UB] - NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! |
4 and 5 seem a bit WIBNIsh simply because they're so unlikely to ever be true. |

beauxeault, if you cant keep your box running for 14 days then its because of your own lack of skill in maintaining a system. |
I suppose that depends on what you do with it during those 14 days. (though of course I wasn't really serious to begin with) |
You are fast asleep in bed. It is 3 am. Suddenly there is a great commotion. Someone is hammering on your door and bawling your name. |
It's the watchman. "Everything is all right, Sir." he says, respectfully touching his cap. "The house hasn't started to burn, the burglar hasn't started opening your window yet, frosty night, starting to snow. And now, if you please, Sir, I shall be moving on." |
I hate and usually ignore popup warnings, but this might be handy. |
Why do I continually imagine implementations of this doing something like "Hey, your computer's running tickety-boo. Everything's fine. There are no pro..." just before it crashes? |
The only two things my box is capable of running for 14 days without crashing are Solitaire and the power light. |

What if the computer freezes while the Blue Screen Of Health is on? Sorry, no good. |
I'm giving this a bun as I think it will provide a stimulus to
OS configuration creators to make OSs with bragging
rights. If the blue screen said: the perceptible delay on
your computer is better than 90 pt of all online
computers with the same processorI'd be happier, plus it
would drive better user
responsiveness product cycles. |
The big antivirus companies or MS competing browsers'
could make the tinyspyware that measured the system's
true human responsiveness to compile the comparison. |
Someone has been holding out on you because you wouldn't need this if you just switched to a Mac. |
