Biocapacitor
a bodily implant that converts energy stored as fat to run mobile electronic devices | |
I'm not a biologist or physicist, so forgive me if this is only quarter-baked.
Somehow we carry around in our bodies enough energy to move a lot of weight around for quite long periods, as well as powering our brains. And yet, through overeating, and insufficient physcial labour, we seem to produce
more energy than we need, which is stored as excess fat. A lot of people want to lose that fat.
In addition, a lot of people would like their mobile devices (phone, camera, palmtop PC etc. etc.) not to be constantly running out of energy and requiring recharging at some electrical outlet.
Couldn't we carry something about our waists that can plumb into our stores of fat and convert it into electrical energy, in much the same way our own body does? Into this capacitor could be plugged the mobile phone, the camera, the CD player. Provided there were some mechanism that prevented the biocapacitor starving one to death, it would seem like a great way to lose weight and not miss vital text messages.

Yes it *would* be great if this were possible. It *would* also be great if we had World Peace. It again *would* be great if there was no poverty or starvation in the World. And it *would* be great if AIDS was eradicated... |

Hmm, nice idea, direct conversion would be difficult. However some kind of manual labour converting device may be the solution. Consider a suit composed of many small transucers; be they electromagnetic or piezoelectric. One could harvest the energy produces when you move around to produce electricity, go to the shops (by foot) and vioala battery charging. Go for a jog, hey presto. Though you may look a bit of a nana in your suit. Maybe just shoes, with transducers in the soles.
Ring ring, damn, got a call (remove shoe and talk into it) ;) |

At the rate biotech is advancing, I'll bet this can be done in a few years. Some sort of bacteria that eats flesh and is modified to produce electricity... But the *if* factor is no small thing here. |

I've got it. By a simple manipulation of muscle structure a pedal could be depressed by one of the subjects feet and then another pedal, attached to a cog opposite the first, could be depressed with the other foot. The cog could be linked up to a generator which would then convert the energy put in by the fat supplies of the body to electricity. Eureka! Fat supply to electricity. |

I was pondering a scenario for a futuristic Mad Max type sci fi, or alternatively a time travel scenario where some evil genius travels to the dark ages to lord it over the inhabitants. I started on this thought by thinking how easy it would have been to conquer America with one Apache helicopter. Easy until it ran out of fuel. |

In this scenario, the evil time traveler renders his captives and slaves for biodiesel of a different sort, in effect feeding them to his dragon. |

You will spend all of your time flying back and forth across the enormous landmass that is the US, constantly firing air-to-ground missiles, just to remind all the isolated peoples of america that you exist. Also, you will need to found an aircraft maintenance academy. |

That's not going to leave a lot of time for sitting around being fanned with banana leaves. |
