Awful puns and puns for all

Better than a rhyming dictionary!

Need to go one up on one of the regulars? Trying to think of just one more "tooth/truth" pun? Just surf to this site, input "tooth" into the search field, and let it do the rest.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, been thinking a bit more about this, and whether having a searchable joke site counts as it being baked. I've decided to move the goalposts.

Rather than a simplistic searchable database of puns and jokes, The "pun search engine" (original name) is more akin to an online dictionary. You can type in one major field (dentistry) and any number of minor fields as an additional option (aliens). The engine will then provide you with lists of possible pun starting words or punning pairs (tooth/truth), and a list of possible puns, sorted by suitability with the additional options as well as the groan rating ("The Tooth is out there" would be pretty high up in our example). Each and every word on screen would have links to related punnery, either by some sort of roll-over mechanism, or by the simple yet glorious hyperlink.

Anyone come up with a better name for this service?

Search only in Puns http://directory.go...ordplay/Puns/?tc=1/
not a pun generator [thumbwax, Jul 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004]

A related idea that is itself a pun http://www.halfbake.../idea/The_20AutoPun

This sounds like an idea with some bite!
Aristotle, Jul 24 2002

       I can't believe it's not baked, actually..
yamahito, Jul 24 2002

Does it rate them on a "groan meter"?

       1 groan- not too bad
3 groans- will get you dirty looks
5 groans- you will lose friends with this one
Mr Burns, Jul 24 2002

But puns that are thought of by yourself are soooo much more rewarding. And in my case lose more friends... 'Pirates of Punzance' almost got me beaten up - but it was worth it for the amount of groans.
Jinbish, Jul 24 2002

Maybe this could be your punultimate resort. If you can't find a pun there, you could just not say a pun at all.

I knead this sins my jokes have groan weakly less punny.

It does a peer in absinthe
thumbwax, Jul 25 2002

Bliss: perhaps 'Am I punny or not?' could just be a mechanism for the pun collection... A front for pun-smuggling..

A well done toast, burnt to a crisp.
FarmerJohn, Jul 25 2002

I, for one, think punography is seriously demeaning.
gizmo_man, Jul 26 2002

Uh-oh, I fear this is going to be just like Otis Bedding...pun for your lives!!!
gizmo_man, Jul 26 2002

       Premise updated.

You could distribute the database and call it Punster. If you mirrored it the second search site could be called Alter Punster. Oh the pun of it all.

On topic for a moment it shouldn't be too difficult to extract the sentence fragment that makes the sentence a pun and index it in a database.

The stumbling block for me is that off-the-cuff puns can be funny because the situation makes them so whereas contructed puns in a speech are almost universally not funny.

Maybe we need a rapid response pun unit that listen in on your conversations and provide you with a small receiver/display device that you mount just beyond the end of your shirt sleeve?

If you make too many puns, do they lock you up in a punitentiary or a punal colony. Punishment indeed.
st3f, Jul 26 2002

I like the idea of a rapid response unit. In fact, if the unit had accompanying dogs, it could might turn out to be a 'rabid' response unit. Do you think there would be many 'pun'ters?

Regarding a name, how about 'Here Comes The Pun', named after a famous Beatles song. Or 'Pun House', named after a famous gameshow presented by a be-mulleted Pat Sharpe? Or even 'The Punning Man', named after a famous film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger? Or 'All for Pun, and Pun for All!' named after a famous catchphrase by some moustachioed Frenchmen?
gizmo_man, Jul 26 2002

Hehe - I like the all for pun and pun for all... might change the title in a bit..
yamahito, Jul 26 2002

I agree with the Jinbush. A true punster's brain should to the punning work. If you must resort to running it through a punner-bot, well that's very insincere.
waugsqueke, Jul 26 2002

       Agh, he speaks the truth.

       Laugh it up, fuzzball.

//I like the idea of a rapid response unit. In fact, if the unit had accompanying dogs, it could might turn out to be a 'rabid' response unit.//

Wouldn't this instead be a rabid respunse unit?
Loonie O'Toole, Jul 29 2002

Only if you wanted it to be. Sorry, Loonie, I'm not in the mood for any gags today...it's just been pun of those days.
gizmo_man, Jul 29 2002

I need a fix. Its been a while since I competed in my last punathon. Help me please
chunky_22, Sep 18 2002

chunky22: Go to the 'Aphorism game show' - see link'. That is there current battlegroaned for puns.

My suggestion for a Name, with particular application to the Web:
awe-full_awful_offal.net

Because some puns are that good, and some are that bad. :) For example, Why is the Windows Operating System perfect for frogs?
"Reboot...reboot...reboot...reboot..."
Vernon, Feb 19 2004

Were having pun with this one
DesertFox, Apr 30 2004

I can't see that this would be such a great idea, it would reduce the originality of all puns, and I seem to find most of the fun is in the spontaneity of it all. Jinbish had the right idea.
fridge duck, Feb 22 2005

well, i think it's a great idea. all you have to do is figure out the basic mechanisms for puns; is it only rhyming? i think it goes beyond that, a little. spelling, etc.

having a secondary reference may make it too complex. in my rhyming dictionary, few sounds have a page full of rhymes. it wouldn't be too much to sort through to find the one appropriate for your situation.
