Alright. So you're on a road trip, or commuting, or whatever. You're listening to the radio, and you hear something cool on the radio. It might be a good song you haven't heard in ages, a heated arguement on a talk show, or a hilarious commercial. Whatever it is, just record it! It wouldn't be difficult,
you know. Cars have had tape players in them for years! All home tape players have the record function, so it would be simple to put a recorder in a car stereo.
If you say that there wouldn't ever be a need for it, so what? In new cars it would be standard, and wouldn't cost a dime more to get a car with a recording tape player installed. Plus, you'd find a use for it sooner or later. Just like cell phones. "Who'd need to make a call on the road?" Ha! Now 50% of Americans have them!

I'm pretty sure someone makes a car stereo with cassette deck that has a record function on it. Did you research this before you posted it? |

What if your car doesn't have a tape player? I personally added an aftermarket CD player to my car, without tape. Second, if you hear something and then start recording, you won't get the entire song. Third, tape players sound awful compared to CD players. Maybe a CD burner or a hard drive instead of a tape recorder, with shock absorbers to keep from messing up a CD or damaging a hard drive. Some aftermarket stereo decks have hard drives in them, and I believe a few of these can record something onto themselves as WAVs or maybe MP3s. Still, fishbone because I'm a quality freak and not being able to listen to a song from the beginning would drive me nuts. |

<off-topic>Cellphones are dangerous to use while driving, making it a very dumb thing to do, as is any distraction while driving. Most Americans aren't very good drivers to begin with, and distracting them certainly can't help.</off-topic> |

What about an in-car radio Tivo? |

some kind of buffer could allow you to record in its entirety a song that had already started, however this would need to be coupled with digital radio broadcasts which don't seem to be all that popular in the good old UK! |
