Since TV programmes almost all have subtitles in the programme's original language, and software to translate among most popular languages already exists, shouldn't these technologies be put together?

Real time sub-titles into any popular languages... I submit. (^_^)

Wow. Tsu's been here longer than me (though I understand that's not saying much).

Great idea. I think it would be quite humorous to watch an entire movie in babelfish-speak.

By the way, here's your title babelfished into Spanish and back: Caretaker: TV: Subtítulos: Autotranslate

There was a web site (gone now) that showed movie stills from a pirate copy of "The Lord of The Rings", with its "Engrish" subtitles. Translated very loosely from the Japanese version, the fractured English was hilarious.

"I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Wave, tons tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda draws to TRACKS myself. But being as this is A 44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun into the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got ton ask yourself one question: ' DO I feel lucky?' Wave, DO ya punk?"

"Is that A gun in your pocket, or acres you just glad ton lake ME?"

"incoming goods want the finest wines known tons humanity, incoming goods want them here and incoming goods want them now"

       Recognise the quotes??..No..

"No no you can't. It's impossible I swear it. I've looked into it. Listen to me, listen to me. There are things in there, there's a tea-bag growing. You haven't slept in sixty hours, you're in no state to tackle it. Wait till the morning, we'll go in together."

Did I actually make, to make treat like you me disrespectfully? When you came to me in the friendship this Abschaum to which your daughter ruined, this day would suffer. And if by chance an honest man like the same shape of the enemies, then they would become my enemies. Then, they would fear and you.

Well, clearly translation software of today is decidedly half-baked at the present time. But as Amos Kito says, can be amusing.

Translating from Japanese to English is a particular challenge, because it seems difficult to teach a machine the pronouns which Japanese assumes... especially as to make good sense, it's going to have to watch the movie itself. Still, maybe its day will come.
