After reading a story about a ice skating rink in Japan
that
was under fire for freezing 5,000 fish in the ice for
decorative effect it was obvious that the idea could be
executed without killing the fish, but rather duplicating
a
natural frozen over lake.
The fish would swim under the
layer of thick, clear ice
that
the skaters would skate on. As you skated you could look
at
the fish swimming below.
I'm quite sure you'll be seeing this at some point because
there's not a single person that would read the article
and
not get this idea. (see link)
How to NOT do this idea.

I once read somewhere that if ice on a body of water was
about 4 inches (10cm) thick, then it would reliably support
any likely amount of weight placed on it (including
elephants). The average skating rink has much thinner ice,
but since the ice rests on a solid (most probably concrete),
not liquid water, the thin-ness of that ice is not
problematic. Anyway, for this Idea, the thickness of the
ices is extremely important. |

|
I would hypothesize that it's much more expensive to monitor ice-over-water for appropriate thickness. |

Ice-over-water - is that anything like VOIP ? |

Icy what you did there [normzone] |

Enough with the ice puns already - there's snow future in them. |

To be fair to the Japanese, it was an incredibly brilliant idea, and the fish were food-rejects and already dead. |
|
|
But they could, instead, do this with those frogs that can survive being frozen. |
|
|
Erm, Fukuoka* Aquarium pointed out, the actual fish were already dead, bought as a job-lot of fish otherwise to be dumped. |

Seems like they didn't have a big budget as they just used photos of other sea creatures. Once the pics are in the ice, it's difficult to see if they are real or not. |
