A standard earthmoving or snow blade would be easier and less costly to arrange, and would be just as effective. In fact, it would be a great deal more useful in everyday situations. |
..but not, one suspects, at 90mph on an uneven road!. |
As opposed to "hydralicly powered pincers"? You're kidding. |
If you hit a pot hole just as the pincers deployed, the resultant foreward somersault would have the same effect and yet not hurt the poor spike strip. |
If you watch cops or those other shows, they deploy spike strips on fairly smooth roads. |
Yeah, they learnt from the Dukes of Hazard, who simply leapt over them using nearby ruined bridges. |
Or fit your car with those new "run-flat" tyres.... |
...or indeed the old run-flat Denovo tyre from the 1970s. |
*hzkzxt* "Bravo Charlie One, this is Hotel Oscar Six--I really need you to deploy the spike strips before this deranged nun-beater drives his gasoline truck into the convent. Can you get out and feel around for a smooth stretch of road? You know, no potholes that might mess up his pincers." *kkkttx* "Hotel Oscar Six, this is Bravo Charlie One--affirmative on feeling up the road, but you are going to owe me a new pair of nylons, Buster." *fffst* |

Is this a thing that joy-riders will affix to newly stolen cars in order to escape the law, or will it be something that people will attach to their own cars in order to protect their tires in the event that the car will be stolen by joy-riders? |

Pincers of a sort are sometimes used on crop dusters. |
[bristolz], I'm having a difficult time picturing that. |
They are wire cutters that are mounted ahead of the rest of the craft so that they can cut cable and wire from the path of a crop-duster should it encounter telephone or powerlines at low altitude. Many of the dusters actually fly below standard telephone pole height wires at the ends of fields. |
The cutters are often just a broad "V" shape, like an open pair of scissors, and are quite effective. Sometimes they are combined with wire deflectors as well. |
Mount the spike blade such that the front suspension controls the height. The blade can then run safely pretty close to the road. Jim Hall's Chaparral race car controlled it's air dam heights this way back in the 60's on the once famous "sucker car". Probably, one should use UHMW plastic for the lower 4 inches so it can flex if it hits something hard in the road. I think this would ward off other road hazards as well.
I want this on my car. |
Why not just mount a set of tires [an axel] in front of the car that you can deploy from inside the car. Let them take the spikle strip(s) |
Damn, I sure miss [bristolz]. She was one clever cookie. |
As for the idea, it's bakery-worthy, but I try not to live my life in such a manner that I wind up on the wrong end of a hot pursuit. Nonetheless, use those pincers to slice this bun. |
Darn! I was hoping this was a plan to get Buffy past a certain bleach blonde vampire by having Willow remove her clothing. |
That will be the new season that's never going to be released, but I'd watch the pirate video. |
Bun. My gas station hold-ups haven't been going so well of late. |
I wonder if those hydraulic cars (the ones that bounce up & down), could be taught to 'bunny hop' over the spike strip? |
Good idea, [Ling]. Probably want that tech upgraded and maybe computer managed, but it seems doable. |
