Appearing on every ballot for public office is an "Anarchy" checkbox. Filling that - or, more importantly, not showing up to vote at all - counts as a vote towards an empty seat.
During Parliament/Senate proceedings an Anarchy (ie:empty) seat is an automatic "No" vote to any motions. Thus parties
have to really agree on something to get anything done, and when 50% or greater of the populace hasn't voted, the government can't do anything stupid for the next 4 years.
Of course, if only a few jurisdictions do it, then all that happens is those areas don't get any of the pork,
So, stand up and be counted ! Go out and not vote.

Not all people who don't vote are apathetic. Some
may be deliberately boycotting the polls, for
example. So I think it would be unwise to default
any no-show as a vote for a particular "party" --too
likely to get abused. I do like the Idea of deliberately
voting for an Apathy Party with the empty seat and
the automatic NO vote, however. |

I have refused to even register to vote for many years. The threat of legal action just makes me more determined to refuse to participate in a farcical process. |

I agree with those^ 3. Of course there is always the standard write-in vote for Mickey Mouse. |

I'm sure I mentioned Mount Apathy, slightly west of Budapest...you could do the party conventions there...nb finally back on the net, in some hick town in Japan. |

How about a sort of disproportional representation,
whereby ticking the appropriate box ensures that
your vote will go to whoever is second or third in the
ballot? |

Inspired by the recent "Boaty McBoatface for President" campaign, I'd like to append the option of having the empty seat filled by works of art or random flotsam and jetsam. |

This allows easy differentiation in Parliament of people who aren't there because they weren't voted in, and people who aren't there because they're too lazy to show up for work. |

Or simply pick up a homeless person from the constituency, and have them participate in return for a shower and a free lunch. |
