Buttons are very cool. They come in many shapes and sizes. The All-Button Dress dispenses with the other stuff, retaining only the buttons. Buttons are closely joined to other buttons with thread, and these many buttons constitute the stuff of the dress. Very small buttons are used where more coverage is desired - larger and less closely apposing buttons can be used in other parts of the dress.

The overall effect can range from Klimpt to junk drawer.

Looks like there's still some medium under them, though. [jutta, Apr 08 2007]

Again, seems to not be *only* buttons. [jutta, Apr 08 2007]

That lamellar armour link is neat in that it also shows how I envision the buttons being hooked together: the thread is on the underside and does not traverse the perimeter of the button.

I just saw a bracelet made out of magnetized little metal cylinders. (I couldn't quite figure out how the cylinders were magnetized, though: any given pair seemed to show no particular preference for which ends stuck together, but they stuck extremely strongly side-to-side.)

So I'm thinking that make a similar thing out of flatter cylinders, you could have a somewhat heavy dress with no thread at all.

(The bracelet was surprisingly stable, but if it was collapsed, it took quite a bit of effort to get it back to a loop. So a dress like this would probably be have to be constructed on you, rather than slipped on.)

Slick idea, [Curry]. Order a few gross of those bracelets and go to work. Maybe a kid's dress first. Or a pair of boxers for yourself. If it does not pan out you can hand them out at Halloween or gift them to charity and deduct the lot.

Very nice. These elastics could be shaped like a capital letter I, with a gold bars at top and bottom. The gold part would slide through the hole but then prevent the elastic from sliding back again.

I have a waistcoat I made out of sunglasses for myself - just thought you would like to know that. You can imagine how cool it looks looks whilst chewing on this +

Ah, found a workable link to something even better (see link). I think I'll break the magnetic dress out as a separate idea, if you don't mind. While it's similar to this, I think it's different enough to stand alone. Please let me know if you disagree.

       I fully agree.

I was reading about shell buttons last night. Buttons used to be made off alll sorts of neat thing. Now it is all plastic. I wonder if anyone salvages the cool old buttons off of unsalvageable garments from estate sales and the like. I bet they do. I bet that there are some phenomenal provate button collections.

These are the buttons that should be used for this dress. Somehow the salvaging of venerable real buttons seems better to me that an assortment of new perfect plastic buttons.

A "button blouse" comprising of only two buttons would be nice.
