Air Bean Bag

 On impact, fill the entire car with bean bag beans...

Instead of an a series of airbags, just fill the entire car up with bean bag beans when there is a collision. The beans could be stored behind the dash and in the doors to provide a sponge like safety barrier when an accident occours. All the occupants are sealed up like a bean bag in a safe foam environment... Added bonus is that it would help insulate the car.

Negatives: 1) Bean bag beans taste awful. 2) One may inhale a serious amount of beans and die of asphixiation (if its spelt like that,but it will still kill you) 3) Those beans are a real bitch to clean up. 4) If you had your Fatal Auto Collision song programmed, you may not be able to hear it from the insulation properties of the beans. 5) Sticking the beans back could take a while.

       dobtabulous raises the boring issue of practicality. To which I would add, how quickly could you actually fill the car with bean bags? Airbags deploy in a tiny fraction of a second. Unless every surface is loaded with miniature bean bag launchers, you'll probably have hit the windscreen long before the bags can get in your way.
