Companies that manage themselves via presentation slides (such
as
Powerpoint) could be doing it with active slides. Active slides
change dynamically, in real time and talk via APIs to other
systems.
The slide presentation editor software has a app style shop to
find integrations that you
can talk to backend systems such as
ERP, payroll, sales data.

Annotation:
I use R or Python notebooks that allow text markup
to be combined with any code to create
interactive and dynamic html that I often present
as slides. Static content is so last century. See links
for some tech jargon. |
I've used Jupyter IPython notebook to do some rudimentary
data science. (Find nearby stores to each customer based on
latitude/longitudes of addresses) |
This idea is more about Presentation software becoming
dynamic. |
Well what are you waiting for, [Denholm]? Bake this as a module for Office and sell it to Microsoft for millions! I'm not snarking. |
[voice] there are ways of embedding dynamic
charts in PowerPoint already - see link for one example
that refreshes when the source data changes. I haven't
found an example where the PowerPoint allows the
user to interact with the data but I'm sure there will be
one. |
That's Object Linking and Embedding of Excel into Powerpoint. |
I want it to be tied to a webserver. I am sure you could write
an OLE module to pull data from a webserver and embed that
in Powerpoint but that's not the kind of integration I want. |
Isn't this just .asp then ? |
Active pages on an intranet server would be exactly this. |
It's not a web page. You could definitely build a web based
version of this - as long as its a presentation with an active
component to it. There are various Javascript presentation
libraries. |
No it's about making the content of a presentation live. So I
could have a bullet pointed list that summarises things from
live system. |
Isn't that a semantic distinction - thin client vs. thick client ? |
Web page displayed on browser <-> Local page with online content ? |
The only difference is that you're configuring (or rather, storing th template) the page locally rather than remotely. |
Looks like this is already available. [link] |
sorry, you've invented a dashboard? |
An interactive dashboard thank you very much. One that still
uses presentation software's interface and model of slides.
(Like Powerpoint) |
Powerpoint with scripting |
[marked-for-deletion] I just don't see anything new here.
Powerpoint has both scripting support and dynamic tie in to
Excel and other tools, and there's Presi and any number of
other tools. |
Powerpoint's scripting is to control the GUI. I don't see any
thing about creating dynamic content with VBA. |
I prefer to use R and Shiny to make interactive slide shows.
These have the added bonus that they are open source. |
See link for an interactive toy example. |
That's really cool. I guess the idea is baked afterall. Just not
how I want it to be yet (within presentation software) |
<HAL in power point> Frank, 30% bar graph of expected HAL standards....Frank - 80 % Probability of human error ... Task Assignment Chart - Frank - outside work </HAL in power point > |
"I'm sorry, HAL, I can't do that ..." |
It looks like nobody has noticed that this idea could be
interpreted as "editing the presentation directly causes changes
in other systems or in how the company runs", rather than the
apparently intended "changes in other systems are automatically
reflected in the presentation". |
// No it's about making the content of a presentation live. So I
could have a bullet pointed list that summarises things from live
system. // |
But how do you rehearse your presentation, when its content can
change at any time with no notice to you? |
No need, most managers just parrot the same content-free bullshit over and over again, and no-one listens anyway. |
Interesting and useful presentations don't reference dynamic information. |
I would be standing there with my laser pointer, doing my best Yoda "that is why you fail", drawing ephemeral circles around bullet points that change any time a note-taker is halfway through one, and laughing hysterically on the inside while drooping my ears in disappointment. |
notexactly, that's perfect understanding. |
